UPVC Conservatory conversion

I have an ugly upvc conservatory which is unusable for 6 months of the year. I don't want to lose the space (3.2 mtrs x 3.2 mtrs) but do want a room that can be used all year round, has doors opening at the front rather than the side, and has an exterior look in keeping with the house.

My thoughts were to replace the roof with an insulated flat roof with skylights, create solid pillars at the front corners, and make the side opposite the existing door solid (with perhaps a wide narrow window towards the top just to let light in)

If money was no object I'd knock it down and put an extension across the whole of the back of the house, but that's not the case so I'm hoping for £15k I can get rid of the eyesore at the back of my house!

Even bricking up one side it's still going to look like a conservatory. I can't imagine spending £15k just to move door/change roof as it'll still look the same and you said it's an eyesore.

I think it’s the white that’s the problem? I’d look at those companies that spray paint them for you and go for a darker colour so it doesn’t stand out as much. Think they can match to your brick or make it wood effect.

In my experience playrooms do not function well, as young children will always want to be in the same room as you! It usually ends up being a huge open cupboard. Maybe you could just make your utility larger and add a load of extra toy cupboards. Good storage can make more difference to a house than an extension. A conservatory should always be seen as a room for spring and autumn, not winter or summer. It can also very easily spoil the room that it is attached to. A conservatory is a very bad location for any sort of storage, and also no good for computer gaming (too much glare!) A garage conversion should be cheaper, and is easily reversed if needed (if the door is filled in with timber boarding and a window, and not brick.) Do you have a double or single garage, now? If double, reducing it to a large single with lots of storage should be fine.

Go for the cheapest option, it's only a door and a window. As you are planning to have alot done at the same time, spend your money wisely. You will already be adding value to your home by adding another room and off road parking. A developer wouldn't spend more on a renovation than they could recoup back on the sale. A friend had 2 electronic operated velux windows with rain sensors put in for their extension and they have never used them! As for their bi fold doors they have banned their children from using them! ( at a recent children's party, granny was in charge of opening and closing doors to let the kids in and out!) Their five grand door is too precious to be even used.

We had exactly the same dilema as you 3 months ago. We have white UPVC windows , Velux and dark thin frame Aluminium Bifolds and I love them! I hunted around for ages and then one of my clients recommended this company and I can’t fault them. I think it will be fine. I’m also in a Victorian house and (mainly due to financial reasons) have slowly replaced windows with uPVC sashes as when we could afford them. We’re in a conservation area - so I paid attention to the finer details such as the glazing bars. I insisted on run through horns (many are stick-on). I also insisted on having no black plasticy bits around the edge of the glass (I hate seeing the thin black edges on uPVC windows!), and I paid extra for a slightly off white painted wood finish. Unless you physically touch them, it’s hard to tell that they aren’t wood!

If you were to move the conservatory doors to the front rather than the side, the conservatory would become a corridor to get from the house to the garden. Having the doors where they are probably is the best layout. By the way, I have the same issues with my, very similar, conservatory but have decided I'd rather wait until i can do the full width extension instead of putting lipstick on the pig of my conservatory.

Love you chap in the conservatory! I want one!
