Cream shaker but which worktop?

Hi, we are going to refresh our current kitchen as we can not afford to do the full works that we want.

The shaker doors we currently have are ivory (bit more magnoli!), laminate wood efffext worktop and brown tiles! (We didn’t choose the scheme!).

Ive bought some lovely pale green tiles that I feel would go with the units but I really want to change the worktops too and ideally not wood as wood floors and doors and it just feels like wood overkill! We may put some cheaper laminate down for the meantime in a lighter wood though.

Ive seen a warm white/grey laminate but I can’t decide if it will look odd with the cabinets. We wont paint them either or dont want to pay for them to be painted. Just want to brighten the whole space up!

So really my question is what would you go for with the worktop? Photos of current brown and ivory style and then pics of the tile and a couple of matte laminate samples I’ve seen.

I like cream units - that’s what I’ve got! 😊 I like your green tiles, but I rather like your brown tiles, they’ve been rather well done. I would go with a white worktop.

I think the worktop goes well with the units. I don't think changing the worktop to one of the samples would work. Perhaps change the tiles?

I would say that almost any colour can go with wood but not all shades of any colour. It tends to work best with more complex / less intense colours. So sage green or grey/blue would go well, but lime green or bright blue wouldn't go so well. Sage or grey/blue are usually available in off-the-shelf Shaker style doors, which you have there. They also go well with other subdued colours, so you could have either of those mixed with cream or pale grey. I wouldn't mix blue and green as you seem to have in your picture above, though, but that might just be my tastes. Also, I was extremely underwhelmed by the quality of oak worktops. They use a fast growing species (there are several species of oak) which has very little character and often a rather nasty orange tint. I chose a birch worktop from B&Q instead, which is much cheaper and has an amazing 'tigers eye' effect once oiled - absolutely no regrets there, my worksurface looks way better than my brother's more expensive oak one. Lastly, I did a lot of research and chose Fiddes Hard Wax Oil to finish the worksurface. Do not skimp on the finish, I've known people who have and they've univerally regretted it. I am extremely pleased with the Fiddes, water can sit on there as long as it wants and never sinks in. I know 2 people who chose different worktop oil brands and they have to wipe water off within 5 minutes or it leaves a mark.

Have you had a look at quartz (silestone, compac, cimstone etc)? They offer a lot of white coloured stone and it has the features of granite worktops with the look, feel and touch but they come without the added maintenance of granite worktops. Wood worktops compliment light coloured kitchens but they do come with extra maintenance that if not kept up to scratch will make the wood look nasty after a while. Corian is a solid surface material that comes with various white/grey/light colourways and a key thing that makes it popular is that the joins are invisible, so it looks like one giant piece. Personal preference and a lot of pictures will get you an idea of what it is you want. There are quite a lot of options out there so make sure you take some time to research each worktop material and brand.

Hi Simon There is a host of colours to choose from in lighter shades it really depends on what other colours you like and how cream your units are. I think an in-frame kitchen looks better in a large kitchen as all the extra lines from the frames and doors can look too busy in a smaller room. Also for practicality you need wider units as you lose so much space due to the width of the frames so 300 wide units are reduced to only a 260 door. The cost of the doors is usually quite a bit more as there's more to them, installation is going to cost more as there's more items to fit and the number of accessories available is less. One other thing with living with an in-frame kitchen is keeping the insides clean, instead of just being able to give the inside of the cupboard a quick wipe down you have the lip of the frame to contend with. We have our cabinets made so the bottom of the frame is in line with the bottom shelf of the cupboard to get around this. Many thanks Lifestyle Kitchens

Can you post a picture form further away so we can see the floor and more of the room. On first glance, it all looks very well planned, the dark tiles work, the worktop works.

When you look from afar it all looks ok but close up the workmanship is terrible, the tiles are matte and show every mark, the grout has turned yellow and the worktop is a mess. I loathe the brown tiles. We will

also be fitting a new white sink.

The floor is ok but again badly laid and also damaged...and very dark which is what I also don’t like. I want light/bright and airy! We are 100% changing the tiles.

This is the other side of the room! Excuse the clothes dryer! We plan to repaint the whole room an off white.

Personally I think wooden worktops, or laminate wood effect, work well with cream units & will tie in nicely with the green tiles. I’d focus on replacing the floor if you want light & bright room, perhaps with a creamy stone-effect LVT. The current floor is too busy with the different colours of the wood. Personally, I’d avoid the grey-white you’ve mentioned as I’d be surprised if it worked with the cream units but then I just don’t like grey & cream together.

Our kitchen runs into a middle living area so I think a stone effect floor won’t look right as it’s all very much open plan. Plus we can’t afford LVT for a temporary refresh project. The other alternative is to replace all of the cupboard doors to either white or grey.

The floor is nice but very stripey. I wonder if a large rug will cover some of it, breaking up the stripey floor? Just a thought.

We will change the floor! Thinking on a light oak herringbone style.
