stacking cabinets

We have a 101-inch ceiling in the kitchen and are discussing a wall with 4 Ikea upper cabinets over our countertop. The question is whether it would look better with one set of 40-inch high cabinets and more molding, or with a set of 15-inch cabinets stacked on a set of 30-inch cabinets with less molding.

We are thinking of using Shaker-style doors with glass for the 40-inch or the 30-inch, with regular panels for the 15-inch. The idea was to get some “hidden” storage in the 15-inch cabinets for items that we don’t use too often. But I’m a little worried it might look odd? Would either option make the ceilings look lower?

Any advice welcome.

I am doing 42" stacked cabinets. 30" and 12" The 12" will be glass doors. Anything over 30" is useless to me and I like the idea of using the upper to store some of the "nice stuff" I acquired after my mom passed away.

What height backsplash are you using? 30+15 gives more storage. It will look good.- if it fits

Thanks At no 9. I hadn't considered putting the curtains on the right. That's a possibility. Sarah U-S - I'm planning to put books and "bits and pieces" on the shelves, then the TV would sit on the cabinet. Planning to pop all the clutter into the cabinet so it's out of sight! I agree, I think the shelves will look ok if they're not as deep as the alcoves, but the cabinet might look a bit odd. Maybe a freestanding piece of furniture would look better. Thanks for the ideas!

As you say you will need a deeper cabinet to allow for pipework. My post towards the top of the page shows mine and they are deeper than normal. Mine also has a solid piece of worktop between each appliance as tumble dryers can sometimes move due partly to movement from the washing machine underneath so this is something I’d recommend too. Find a local kitchen cabinet company or fitter who can make a deeper Carcase. It‘s easily made. If you click on my images to enlarge them it will give you a clearer idea.

Hi I am in the middle of designing my kitchen layout out . Ceiling hight is 10 ft . current configuration is 30 + 18 . I am flexible with windows width where height is constant i.e dimensions. My KD has asked to finalize the design . but I am confused with cabinet height . I prefer 36+ 15 but I am confused with 42" . I want to have 2 separate refrigeration units . room size is 14' × 14'.3" . I want to have little section for tea n coffee which is currently next to entrance door btw two tall cabinets. I am too short to make it workable on a day to day basis. I have 42" cabinets now and I haven't used anything out of the top since I put it there 10 years ago!

Yeah, I don’t expect we would use either the 15s or the top shelf of the 40s very much. But putting 15s in there would give us some long term storage, which we could definitely use. I’m more worried about the appearance than finding a use for them — whether breaking it up into two stacks of cabinets will look too cluttered or make the ceiling look lower.

@Sherry Brighton - most women cannot reach anything beyond the second shelf, or even the back of the second shelf, regardless if the cabinets are 30", 36", 42", or higher. Most people use a stepstool rather than foregoing the valuable storage space of upper cabinetry. I understand you don't want to go higher than 30", but my advice for other people making their kitchen choices is not to worry about reaching the upper shelves - you will need a stepstool regardless of whichever cabinet height you buy. I am 5'3" and my cabinets go to my 9' ceiling - I use the upper shelves to store holiday items, drawer liner, my mother's platter, and similar. These are rarely used, and I get out the stepstool to get them, not a big deal. Where else would I store these things? I do not have storage elsewhere for these items, and would never forego that kitchen cabinet storage space - the choice of cabinet height is pretty permanent once you make it.

I don't need the cabinet space and find step stools bothersome. Therefore, in my personal kitchen renovation I am doing 30" and 12" stacked cabinets with glass in the upper 12".

I have a walk in pantry in the kitchen, pantry cabinets surrounding my refrigerator, and a huge pantry/storage area in the laundry room directly off the kitchen,. I also have 4 storage racks in the basement for seasonal and bulk items.
