Fence colour thoughts

Hello

I would love to hear your thoughts on whether painting this fence black (matt) would be too harsh.

The only planting remaining will be the tall purple plum in front and the privet hedge to the side. Everything else visible will be gone which will expose some of the front door which will be black.

Grateful for feedback :)

I think fences look better as a backdrop to planting. That is black fence at the back and planting to the front, making the plants stand out.

I can see what you mean. The fence needs to be painted quite badly but it’s not an option to plant in front of it as it’s basically around the front of the house and the door is actually on the side.

Taking it out isn’t an option either for several reasons. One being long term I’d like to put parking in the front and do a side extension so painting will buy me 3-5 years until I can do that.

I quite like its warmth and would go well in small furnishing touches in our new house moving to in Spring - it is fairly modernist, but has exposed brickwork and wood cladding, a slightly industrial feel. I like wine shades generally and wear them a lot. However, it could look a bit fusty in an older building, slightly faded and 80s chinzty even? I would definately be worried about it on walls, unless I wanted that feeling

Hi, the slabs were Natural Paving products. Premierstone Platinum. size: 900 x 600. They look brilliant, people love them, they are easy to sweep. However, they are a deathtrap! Kids in socks skid over on it and if there is the slightest bit of water it's like an ice rink, especially the steps! Am going to paint it with a non slip coating in the hope this solves the problem. You also need to make sure they are bedded on a solid base of mortar, rather than blobs, as the blobs wick up the moisture and you can see this on the top of the slab. Saying that, I do have a French drain under the patio, so there's a lot of moisture there. I only got round to painting the fence this weekend (Rubbish I know!) Started out the front and will work my way round the back as each panel needs adjusting as it's sagged. Oped for Cuprinol Silver Copse in the end. Really happy so far.

I’m a little confused. Reading this on my phone, in the sunshine, so perhaps I can’t see it properly, but the fence on the left looks like the original paint colour in the bottom (before?) photo. I actually like the wood colour on the fence. It seems to work well with the timber at the bottom (and the decking).

Hi Michal Thanks for your comments.. I would definitely go with the black from the green, it looks much richer and the plants just pop in front of the black. It does not close the garden in at all. As for painting the fence post, I have always painted mine as I don't like the look, I personally think it looks more industrial if they are not painted, also one side of my garden has wooden posts which are painted which I think it would look odd if the other side wasn't. I have always used Cuprinol ducksback, brilliant paint with good coverage. I have so far used nearly three 5L tins of it and have painted 20 panels with two coats. Hope all this helps.

Use charcoal instead of black. Less intrusive, same sleek look.

Love the slope on your site, although I imagine it presents some challenges to any building works. I’m intrigued... do you currently have (steep) steps down to the main door, or does it open into the first floor of your house?

I recommend a soft charcoal colour, less of a contrasat to the setting but still contemporary

Jen thanks. The house is ‘sunken’ with a retaining wall around it on one side. There are 3 steps down to the front door and it’s a tiny little bungalow.

Sloped sites are not preferred for obvious challenging reasons but in my city it’s rare to find level plots :)

Just wondering what you are going to do with all the existing greenery as it will be very bare! The fence painted would be lovely in dark grey or even black with the greenery, but without it wouldn't look great. Or are you going to make use of the space?

Well spotted - the only bit that remains is the tall ‘Purple Plum’ tree in front and the privet hedging along the side. The rest has been now removed (after many years of neglect) so the fence is all exposed. I’m actually also having a gate installed too.

It’s actually pretty unused dead space but because of the retaining wall on one side it’s really awkward to put a divider up to separate front and back garden with the approach from the side so actually it’s an enclosed wrap around garden right now. I hope to side extend or at the least add a porch creating the front door facing front with parking in front also. But that’s longer term goals.

It’s just grass in the front and because if the fence it’s not really visible if you are walking past. The front windows have a bit of a further reaching view of green hills in the distance (a valley of houses in between). Anyone walking past is likely looking there :)
