Support brackets for worktop overhang on island

Can anyone share experiences with brackets to support the worktop overhang on a kitchen island?

I'm planning a kitchen island with a 22mm thick Dekton worktop and there will be an L-shaped overhang on two sides - see my sketch below (I drew this for the kitchen company so ignore all the extra info!). The overhang bits are on the top edge and right hand edge of the island as you're looking at it from above in this sketch. The overhang will be 400mm deep on each of those sides. Dimensions of the island overall are 3000mm x 1000mm.

The worktop is being supplied by a separate company from the kitchen itself. They've advised that extra support will be needed and that I should speak to my builder (who's installing the kitchen). My builder has advised that the worktop company need to give more information about what's required. He's also pointed out that we'll want something which can't be seen (the bit where 4415 is marked on the plan is sliding doors which will lead onto the terrace, so I'm keen that you don't notice the supports as you look into the kitchen from outside).

I'm wondering whether anyone on here has supports under your island - and if so could you share information/pictures of how they work/your experience in terms of whether they can be seen?

I know you didn’t get any reply at the time. Did you resolve this as I’m in the same predicament. Only obvious option is a US company, but there must be something similar in the uk.

We did this in our previous house (in US) - they builders built a steel frame and routed it into the chipboard/MDF/whatever goes under the actual worktop. It allowed an overhang of 450mm on both sides. It was a total bugger for them to do though and they didn't enjoy doing it.

In UK (and probably in US too I expect), everyone's told me max of 300mm for an overhang so we'll stick to that this time I think.

Hello, we have a 2300mm x 1200mm island and 4 seats altogether in a right angle ( 2 on each side ). On the 1200mm side there are 2 seats so 600mm per person, on the 2300mm side there is 1400mm for the seating so 700mm per person ( but need to take into account of the corner ). The overhang is 300mm. The proportions seem fine. I guess it also depend in the depth of your cupboards underneath. Definitely don't have 5 seats in a row, they look nice in photos but it would be tricky to talk to each other. I only have a photo without the seats at the moment but we have since bought bar stools and the proportions do work, it's just that my island is currently too messy to take a photo :-). I'll try and take one in the morning with the bar stools in!

We had this in our last house. The post was extraordinarily useful as it housed plug and ethernet sockets for running stuff on the island, as well as the master heating controller for the house, and extra switch for the island pendant lights (H section steel beam, so lots of room for running cables along two sides of the post). Really did not detract from the kitchen very much at all, and was a lot cheaper than the goal-post steel that would have been required otherwise. I'll try to find a pic. You can also, as others have said, make a feature of it with a round post, or even just the painted steel beam itself for an industrial look.

Worktop needs support but can cope with a 300mm overhang usually - so if you had two 800 cupboards ( not drawers ) set 50mm off the side with 50mm infill to wall) and central to the worktop - you’d have overhang on three sides to sit at . This would probably by the most stable solution and give a very good space for bar seating three on each side - enabling people to walk past on the end if only 1m ish available there - if you seat people all around as your proposed idea it might gain you some drawers - but will be tight for walking past on all three sides.... allow yourself one free walkway !

The worktop fabricators will generally refer to the quartz manufacturers guidance, and best practice is of a maximum unsupported overhang of 30cm. If you ever had a problem you may find any worktop warranty is null and void if you disregard this. In the image it looks like you still need a back panel, and you could simply space this back from the units to achieve this maximum overhang?

Ive ended up sticking with a 300mm overhang but we are supporting it anyway because of the proximity of the hob cutout to the overhang. Also could only find readymade supports in US so builder has arranged to have them made by steel manufacturers, and we have an arrang of end panels to hide them. not fitted yet but imminent!

Thank you. I’ve found some on ‘Etsy’ but £55 ish a bracket, so will add up.
