Colour blocking help for an open plan kitchen/living area

Hey everyone!

I've just purchased my first property - it's a new build and so is currently all white and is being used as a show home. I will get the keys in early June!

Basically, the living room/kitchen/dining area is all one length. I have bought a sofa that I ADORE, which is green velvet.

The kitchen cabinets are grey, and the theme of the kitchen is grey and a sort of lemon yellow.

Anyway, my question is - if I want to paint or wallpaper where the living area is, how can I or should I do this so that it doesn't look ridiculous next to the kitchen/dining area?

I wanted wallpaper behind the sofa, with a sort of jungle theme which is green and gold. So in retrospect that may now look better if I put the sofa where the TV currently is in the photos and then someone suggested some colour blocking and maybe adding a plant, bookcase, etc as a more physical barrier on the other wall.

Any help or ideas appreciated! I want to spice it up a bit.

Congratulations!

Would the sofa fit on the tv wall? The only issue with that wall is the paper would finish on a corner unless you took it around the recess.

I’ve no idea how it works on a curved wall but you can use a room divider as in the first two pics. If you did that personally I’d go for a slatted wood divider as in the last 2 pics. I love the first one (and would just have the divider fractionally deeper than the sofa) but I think the other one would work better in the space so you can see through.

or you can colour block and use the pattern for cushions, art etc

I‘d probably live there a while anyway, a large plant would also zone as would a pendant over the dining table, a rug big enough to sit under the sofa feet etc

Congratulations!

The sofa like in the photos really is the 'preferred spot' (interior design psychology; a wall behind you and ability to see entry), so perhaps create a (or multiple) framed wallpaper rectangle where the sofa will go?

My advise would be to pick a solid color for the colorblock effect and keep the frames jungle leaves paper poster size, so the green sofa will be a statement piece as well (and not get lost in the jungle).

And instead of a screen you could place/hang a shelving rack next to the sofa, opposite the door.

The only real way to make it clear from the kitchen is to have it against the back wall at the foot of the stairs, but this may then make the bottom of the stairs look cluttered and it will then be difficult to put a coffee table there. If you are going to use a table I'd go for a clear glass one so that it looks invisible. I think the best place for the sofa is on the wall along the stairs, it seems the only logical place.

thanks for commenting. i've now decided to go with fnb Joa's white for the living aea. its a greyish cream which i think will be light, warm and cosey without clashing with the other colours. i didn't initially think cream would work as my base throughout the house is light grey, but its quite a greyish toned cream and fits well the cream carpets throughout house :) Kitchen being fitted today. exciting to have it all come together now.

Thank you both!

Love the idea of a divider of some sorts, and the idea of framing the wallpaper such a great idea instead of papering the whole thing!

I didn’t really want the sofa by the door and with no visibility to that side of the room - but these ideas have made it so much easier to keep the sofa on the main wall whilst it not looking too weird 😂
