Design a large garden on a budget of hundreds not thousands!
Comments (44)It's worth looking for a shed on Freecycle or in Friday Adds, there are good things going for cheap or for free because people want them removed. You produce growing area needs to look good, I think, because you are going to need to place it where it will be visible, to get enough light. It also looks like you will need to protect it well from Rabbits. They may have something to do with the uneven lawn. The most useful thing I could tell you, as you want an orchard, is to leave a large weed free area around each tree you plant. When I say weed free that includes grass!!! If you put at least 5 centimetres of good green waste compost over that and stake the tree really well, it will be well established in a few years. The best Apple tree I ever planted had a stem but no head at all and it overtook all the others in the second year. Trees need TLC rather than VISA or Mastercard....See MoreGarden design ideas needed for cottage garden
Comments (9)Love the frontage of your cottage. That wall is adorable! You have a couple of shrubs there already. Do you know what they are? There are some great low growing plants that need very little work once they are established. As well as T Gray‘s suggestions, you could also add Aubretia which is a low growing plant that has gorgeous purple flowers in spring. It’s very common and available everywhere. Campanula is a blue flower that cascades in summer (some are tall so read the labels). Another flower is Erigeron, again it spreads and is low growing with quite large purple daisy like flowers in the summer. My favourite is Geranium - they come in a huge array of colours and various heights so check those before buying. They flower in the summer. Don’t forget daffodils, such a ray of sunshine in the spring. They can be planted in the autumn. A lawn is a great idea - relatively cheap to lay too. I think the best way to have a low maintenance garden is to stick with trees and shrubs which dont need too much fussing with. Trees can be pricey, but so many places sell shrubs, not just garden centres, such as nurseries,, supermarkets and even car boot sales! Comments (4)Looks like quite a challenge! For now I think it makes sense to keep the main patio in the middle and use this as a seating area. For other areas, as a temporary solution and to prevent weeds from growing I would perhaps treat them with glyphosate weed killer or pull up as many weeds as poss providing it’s dry weather leave for a few days to work then cover with a weed proof membrane then on top of that use bark chips. Bark chips are ideal because you can use these at a later stage for flower beds, borders and so on..plus it’s safe for kids to play on. For a grassed area I’d perhaps use the area in the left but the soil will need some work first. Rotivate the soil (churn it up) pull as many weeds out as poss, then use a soil rake to even it out and remove stones. Put some top soil on, rake again then you could either sow grass seeds or lay turf rolls, either way it would need watering daily and can’t be stepped on for a few weeks. Hope this helps:)...See MoreGarden design on a budget, blank canvas
Comments (0)I have removed all vegetation and had digger flatten this area of my bungalow. I now need to out it back together! I'm hoping to lay patio parallel to rear of bungalow (where the sand base is, it was a patio previously) as french doors will open onto that area. Other than that I'm not sure! need some turf, poss some gravel areas. might leave behind garage as chipings/gravel/planting area. any ideas welcome! I have quotes to repair/straighten fences, replace gravel boards and wood panels on right side. was thinking paint the back gravel board fence a charcoal grey. would LOVE any suggestions please....See Morearc3d
