Karndean subfloor

I live in a first floor flat. Currently have carpet but want to switch to engineered wood or Karndean. The subfloor seems to be pretty creaky chipboard. Is one better than the other on that surface pls? I have read that unless Karndean is fitted on a perfectly level floor it will show every lump and bump. However, also seen that engineered wood has it’s own issues expanding and contracting on a squeaky slightly uneven floor. Is one obviously better then the other in terms of adaptability and sound on a chipboard floor?

Whilst I recognise there's a few tradespeople on here bemoaning fussy clients I have to say my biggest regrets when renovating my house was not being specific enough with trades! We had an electrician put in an extra light switch in the hall to control both the downstairs and upstairs lighting. He put it in a good 10-15cm lower than the other switch further along the same wall which looked completely ridiculous. Made him move it in line with the other one much to his annoyance. Another similar incident was with a vertical column rad for the kitchen - whilst I was specific enough this time to ask it be centered to the wall it was on, he installed it much higher than needed with about 30cm of pipe sticking out the bottom! It would have looked much better in line with the doorframe adjacent. Had to learn to live with that one. We had engineered wood floors put in upstairs - the fitter used the shortest wall in the smallest room to take a plumbline from. When it came into the hall it was obviously on a complete wonk. By this point I'd gotten a bit better at speaking up and ensuring we actually got what was needed (and paid for!). He had to take it up and re-lay using the hall as the plumbline. Looked so much better but he was extremely annoyed! After all this I learned to use masking tape to direct exactly where pipes/light switches/trim should be fitted so there was no room for 'interpretation'. I also forced myself to speak up more and advocate for what I really wanted. That said I'm a designer by trade so I generally know what I want and how to make it look good but was definitely a bit too shy to contradict trades in the beginning!

Hi Gabby - yes I noticed that as well re the notifications!! Ridiculous! Maybe there is something in settings that stops that otherwise I will just have to unfollow everyone, urgh. Whats the name of the one you liked from the samples? There was some nice Karndean BUT they were well out of our price range so it always depends on your budget of course. We wanted a warm but neutral floor and this one looks both warm and cool sometimes. Originally I wanted a rich warm floor to balance out the grey but the orange tones clashed with the units and made them look too blue/retro so we decided to go with this one instead.

We're an Amtico house (Amtico Spacia Xtra ). I love it. Looks great, cleans easily, and our is slightly textured so feels nice underfoot. Our 'planks' have very slightly bevelled edges so that also gives the impression of real wood. I agree that it does 'ding' relatively easily, but we've only had one. It's been down coming on 3 years now (3 kids, 1 dog, 1 puppy, and lots of parties) and still looks as good as new. The fitters had to put some self levelling down throughout the downstairs, but the final finish is fantastic. Expensive, but IMO well worth the money. Help needed to decide if wood effect tiles are ok for living room.

With grandchildren I would avoid glossy tiles as they will be very slippery when wet. Karndean and other luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) are a good practical option. Floorify and Polyfloor are some other brands that also do wood look. They are pretty bombproof. I’m not sure if they are compatible with underfloor heating, however they are not cold like tiles so it’s less necessary. For wet underfloor heating you would generally need to raise the floor to accommodate the pipes and screed (which also means redoing doorways etc) or take up and replace the whole existing subfloor. So it’s quite a big job.
