Temporary base for my Forest Garden 6x4 shed?

Hi all. Looking for some help please as a first time garden owner! We ordered a shed when we first moved and whilst waiting for it to be delivered our garden plans have changed. We now want to wait until we pave the whole planned area and use some cheaper / flatter slabs for where we will install the shed- this will be circa 6 months, but no later than next March (absolute worst case).

So we now have this shed in our garage which we use as a gym, so we are looking for any tips on a temporary install to get it out of the garage? Google tells me I can't just pop this on the grass but is there any short term easy fix until we get the patio down?

The easiest temporary shed base is to use the plastic grid system. It is very robust and lightweight. There are many online retailers that sell the specific size. You could probably still use it after the patio has been laid as a shed base or sell it on.

I’d look on EBay and see if you can get a job lot on second hand pavers.

Hi there, a lovely climber that needs little or no attention is an evergreen honeysuckle called 'Fire cracker' which grows in sun or shade. One tip for more flowers is train the plants horizontally not vertically. White jasmine is another evergreen climber that smells wonderful and again needs only to be tied to the wall. It has white flowers that give off a heady scent at night from June to September and in winter the leaves turn a glorious red colour. Cotoneaster is also a great evergreen shrub that looks great all year round and the bees love it. Mine is now climbing a wall but started off as a standard shrub. White flowers in the summer and red berries in autumn. Good luck xx

Hi tani :-) the system will works with any tile as long as it has a rectified edge and is 20mm thick for strength! Tbh they are an added extra but the thought of being able to lift and lay them where ever I liked really appealed to me, plus the extra for the system I can save in labour and do it myself! Pretty easy if your anyway good with your hands and have a good diamond cutting blade.

Start with your budget, what is it? Make a plan, gardening is not an overnight transformation, it takes time but that for many of us is the sheer joy of it. A year of all around plant interest is possible in time. I would spend my budget on getting the basics in place, so decide what you want e.g. do you want a patio and large beds and no grass, or some grass? If your local college has an agricultural course running they might be willing to help you as the students would learn a lot here, maybe ask? What is your soil type e.g. is it heavy clay or sandy? Is it acidic, alkaline or neutral, these facts are deciding factors on whether or not plants will thrive. Look at what plants are thriving in your local area that is a good guide to your soil, e.g. if there are lots of rhododendrons thriving near by then the soil will be acidic. If it were me, I would get it all dug up, lay a patio, add large beds (put in lots of fine bark compost), and no grass, just gravel. Work with your site, right plant right place is a mantra for a very good reason (!), there is no point planting sun loving plants if you get little sun so do your research on plants that thrive in shade, one good website is Plantsforshade. I would add lots of trellis to grow climbers as they will give you height and trick the eye into making your garden appear bigger, climbing hydrangeas, star jasmine ( for scent) some roses but choose carefully. Now draw up a year's plan so you can start planting for all year round colour, take your time and it's not daunting. Add attractive tubs (often on sale on our local Facebook!) and and plant appropriate annuals, there is loads of advice on line. Best of luck.

Hi Sonia. It’s the plant with a name that I can never spell...but I’ll have a go.... tatrapanax papyfirus ‘Rex’ ???? Chinese rice paper plant. Or aka The Triffid! That’s easier to remember. 😉. Apparently they can send out suckers from the roots several meters away so my neighbours might get a few babies in years to come. Can’t argue tho, it’s a fab jungly looking plant. Here’s the proud mum!

I’d just lay the slab base for the shed and do the rest after. If it’s budget restrictive on buying slabs look on Facebook Marketplace.

The key thing is to not have it sitting on anything that could retain damp. So probably as a temporary solution you could put down Paving slabs or the plastic base that someone as suggested. If you have it sitting on grass, the base will rot. You probably don't even need to use a full set of pavers if it's for under a year. Of course, if you don't lay the base properly then there is a chance that it will start to settle in an uneven way but that would probably take some time to occur
