Looking for a bespoke ladder to access mezzanine and storage

I have a small but tall spare bedroom that has a high mezzanine platform at 2.5 m and am just signing off on bespoke fitted wardrobes that also have high storage cupboards at 2.3 m . I am looking for solutions for a demountable ladder and rail system to acess both areas safely.

A joiner is probably the person you're looking for. You can find local ones online or read the adverts in local papers, village or parish magazines, school grapevines etc. Where in the UK are you?

I too always had the thoughts that hand made pieces were much more expensive...but not always the case... And its immensely satisfying when you get the style, size and colours of what you would need... My brother in law has made me just a few piece... Very simple, for storage.. But THEY FIT. just where they need too.. I love wood.. My Dad was a French cabinet maker in the early 50's and as child I would sit at the table and watch in amazing ways he worked with wood... Small pieces he would make us simple little toys, or no's... Nothing painted. We were very lucky in our home to have cupboards in the kitchen, on the wall fitted and it was covered in Formica... We also had a beautiful solid wood fireplace... Shelves for Mums little ornaments (which would never touch, look with your eyes only). I too like to work with wood, when having the chance...memories that will stay with me forever.. (Sorry for the reminiscing.).. But yes so wish I could afford to build my own home and incorporate all the things...Made By hand... Thanks for a very interesting article....

Hi M K. wow what a space! I understand the need to soundproof the mezzanine but do you really need shutters for privacy? Surely you would need to get on a ladder to peer in the new window? As you said it is an unusual shape so surely the simplest option would be to create a stud wall that reaches to the ceiling with your glass window to the size and shape you desire put into that stud wall. A bespoke glass solution for the entire area would be very expensive I’m sure! If the space is overlooked I know you can have glass that goes opaque at the flick of a switch.

Hello Looby_Liz I agreed with rinked keep the storage. My first flat was a studio and it was always storage the problem. I do not know how the storage is used but you can have a pull out desk from it. A storage wall keeping the bedroom private to the rest of the flat. Storage shelves wardrobe on the bedroom side could be made or hacked but so that the hangers are flat to the wall, so minimising space. Like you see in shops, but better. On the opposite side in your living area you can have some clever storage for your desk., dinning area. Have a look at Quantum Tech HD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkEMzxxnKUQ some amazing ideas. Approx 3mins 40sec in, is a great idea for a desk/dressing table. But the whole video will give you some ideas. I do not know where they are based? But there must be other companies too? And if you are a DIY-ist or know someone who is, some look like modern ikea style and they may have the desk, table, bed fixings to create similar. Have a look at modern Japanese interiors to get some clever ideas too. In feng shui you would not have your bedroom door opposite the bathroom. So needs a door to keep private if not there already. Keeping things off the floor helps stops the room from feeling enclosed. But clever storage that conceals for eg. an ottoman to under bed storage beds, (the designs have much improved since my day). Steps can be storage. And your door to the bedroom could be disguised too as a continuation of your shelving. Lighting and flooring can zone your areas and create different moods. As it is a small space that has to do everything in your life. Possibly "live" with it for awhile with the things to see how it feels, where the light changes during the day and night. The colour changes. See where you walk how the kitchen works and then with your research you will know where to place or rearrange your personal things. And don't forget plants and pictures with the lighting. Have fun.

What is actually needed in the kitchen area on a day-to-day basis? Can crockery, etc be moved elsewhere (perhaps to the dining area)? I have a galley kitchen, though it is larger than this one. And I am guilty of keeping things in it which don't really need to be there, such as rarely used items. Saucepans were a huge problem, which I have solved by investing in Cristel* pans with removable handles. These can not only stack together, they can be used in the oven, so save on roasting pans too. I am also a terrible food hoarder, and found myself with packets of pasta in three different cupboards. Just before Christmas, I made a pantry area in the garage, which happens to be quite cool, keeping only day to day items in the kitchen. It has made a big difference! * They are NOT cheap, but take any amount of punishment and come up looking perfect. I particularly love being able to make a stew, then pop some pastry on top and stick it in the oven, or cheese on a pasta dish and put it under the grill.
