Hollow below kitchen quartz counter top

Hello everyone, I would like your input regarding my quartz kitchen counter top. It was placed ontop of the counter like that and is hollow as per the pics. I am not an expert with kitchen counter tops and the kitchen company has told us that no support is required and that it wont crack even with weight. I am a little worried as we spent a fortune on these quartz counter tops and would be heartbroken if they were to crack.

Is it hollow because it is going to slot over the existing worktop

Hi Daisy, thanks for the response. I am not even sure why it is hollow actually. They have already placed it on top of the existing work top and it is hollow as the pic above...I was wondering whether that's normal

Thanks for tour comment. I have doubts between two different browns. or this other one the une at the bottom is honed and the one on top is shiny. Another difference is that the one on top has a veining and looks more like a natural Stone.

It's an awkward one. No it shouldn't be like that. It's not awful and I doubt the Quartz is compromised, but it's not perfect and if you're not happy then ..................Check for level.by looking at the bottom of all the units, do they line up? The problem is with the units, not specifically the fitting of the work top. It's the poorly fitted units that have caused the problem with the worktop. However, this should have been noticed and checked for level and that they were solid before the worktop went on. So, as often is in these situations it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. I'm presuming that the reason the fitter used shims is because the cupboard below wouldn't go up any further or it would have been completely out of line with the others for whatever reason? The doors are easily adjusted back to level, but the carcass should have been right to start with. Could this be happening because the floor isn't solid? There should have been no movement, especially not that much? I'm wondering if there was a little bounce in the floor such as you may get on floorboard with boarding over the top and the weight of the quartz affected that? I'd take it back up with the worktop fitter and the kitchen fitter together on site.

Any pale colour will stain if you treat it badly so even quartz which is considered to be hardwearing will need care so you don’t leave anything on it that has a strong colour (such as red wine spills etc). Beware- the inexpensive quartz seems to be more plain while the more veined patterns can be three times the price. If you are comfortable with a higher price range you might consider porcelain style products like Dekton where marble like products are widely available.

Hi, do you have photos of the space? Is it a light or a dark room? I would personally choose a white or light grey quartz or something like Silestone. Maybe a marble vein in it, like Calacatta Gold. You need to get some samples to see the colours in situ. But if it is a very light filled room, you could also go for a darker granite or quartz.

It is what I’d call a cover. It saves the fitter removing the existing worktop. It’s not wrong but i would have thought they would have explained to you that this was their intention.

It looks like you've asked for extra thick worktops judging by the front edge and the way its been mitre jointed, i would of expected the hollow section to of had mdf for support and not just bits of batten. When you have extra thick (ie more than 30mm) quartz worktops its not a solid piece of quartz but fabricated with either a mitred front or sandwich front edge and then packed out underneath (with mdf usually) due to the weight.

Thank you so much for your response lifestyle kitchens :) Yes, I thought it needed support underneath and I did raise that issue with the kitchen company but they assured me that this is how it's done. I feel they just took the easy way out. What are the chances of this cracking? Do you think I should put my foot down and insist they redo it with the extra mdf support. I paid a fortune for this kitchen and I am so disappointed with the way they have handled matters. Thank you once again for your response. It is appreciated :)
