walk through lounge layout

Hi all, I’m struggling with how to layout furniture in a small walk through lounge. Ideally I want to put more of a wall between the entrance/ hallway and lounge but the traffic flow into the kitchen (back right) is tricky. Any ideas?

2 sofas creating an L shape, one across top, one down left side, both leaving a corridor type walkway?

I think because you have access via the Utility if it were me I'd go for the option without a corridor. You can take visitors straight into the lounge, but get direct access via the back door. Also, as you say it will give you a much bigger 4th Bed and Utility. It's not a massive detour for the family for a cuppa either. The only negative about it, is how far you will have to take your laundry basket to get into the utility. That might be an issue if you're having to take baskets backwards and forwards through the house all weekend? One of the space planners on here might be able to suggest other options though.

Hi! As 'Man About the House' suggested, you could maximise space by having an l-shaped corner hanging rail on the right hand side. We design and fit built-in wardrobes which can have doors, or be fitted without. Sliding doors can often be the best solution in small spaces, and mirrored ones would help lessen the enclosed feeling you mentioned you were concerned about. With regards to height, we often fit a pull-down hanger to the upper tier in rooms with high ceilings. Please get in touch if you'd like any more help! Best of luck!

If you decide to go the stid wall route, then bear in mind that a single skin of 12.5mm plasterboard on each side with internal sound insulation gives you a 42 dB rating and if you have a double skin on each side with sound insulation, then you get a rating of 54 dB. This is the difference between hearing murmurs and nothing at all. Many of the builders that I have come across also tend to use timber as the internal studs, which in my opinion is very bizarre as metal studs are easy to install and are designed specifically for these types of walls. What i more they allow the insulation to be tucked in and sound transference is not an issue. The thickness of a standard single skin wall is 75mm and the double skin is 100mm. AS mentioned above these walls are easy to remove in the future and reinstate to the original. Best of luck.

I love Fran's idea - she had me at 'bar'. If you don't want to move the dining table though, you could try the two, sofas facing each other, slightly over to the fire side of the wall so not blocking the doorway and arch to the kitchen. If you moved the sofa a little out of the bay window and then placed the other one a, little, further back, so encroaching part of the other room you'd be playing with the proportions of the space and using a bit more of the middle room. You could get another chair then for where you've moved the sofa from. I think it's good you've got your gifted sofas at the minute, because you can play around with the arrangement and decide what works before making your choice of what you'll eventually replace them with. I know the pics I'm attaching below, different proportions but hopefully you'll get an idea of what I mean. I think the pic with the chaise between two spaces is fab but I'm not sure that it'd ever be more than a big ornament??
