kitchen at the front or back of bungalow

Would a kitchen diner at the front of bungalow in the current living space be nicer as it is a larger space (5.75m x5.14m) with sunnier aspect but looks out onto other houses and away from the garden or put the kitchen in the room with the skylights at the back and keep the living space at the front? The room at the back is smaller (2.7m x 4.6m) and north facing but will have more connection to the garden. The detached bungalow sits on a long slim plot. I like the idea of having a lounge space separate to the kitchen diner. The north facing garden gets sunlight as the roof pitch is shallow plus I was considering creating a porch patio by the side entrance. All thoughts will be appreciated.

Hi, I think it depends on how you use the rooms & garden really. If you entertain a lot, you might want to have a larger space. Personally, I’ve always preferred a kitchen with lots of natural light do the front of the house may work for that. Equally, if you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and enjoy your garden, you may want to connect it to the garden at the back, eg with easy access to an outside dining area. But if you prefer to sit & relax whilst looking out to the garden, it may be better to have the living space at the back. Think about what works for you rather than what you ‘should’ do.

I agree with Jonathan, it depends on so make different things about your property including light levels, its location, window views, how you use the space, etc. I've always thought that kitchens should be at the back and don't like some new-build houses locally where you can see straight into the kitchen from the street. However, when we renovated our property, we put the kitchen at the front. This was in a new extension so new drains had to be put in anyway rather than moving old ones. The front of our house it quite high off the ground whereas the back is closer to the garden. We're also at the end of a cul-de-sac and set back from the road so no-one can see in to the kitchen. If our living space was at the front, we wouldn't have had much in the way of views as we'd only see tree tops from a seated position. Also, at the front of the house, we have the sun in the morning which I like first thing in the morning for breakfast and then the sun is at the back in the afternoon which works well for seating and dining. So think carefully about what would work for you in your house rather than where a kitchen 'should' be.

Anthracite is RAL No 7016. I’m not sure where our builders sourced the guttering and downpipes but I’m sure you could google it. We had the paint for the soffit boards and eaves colour matched by Johnstone’s Paint - we haven’t finished the painting yet! Can’t afford render but happy with how it looks.

I do sympathise as I have mobility issues due to arthritis, that’s why my builder raised up the patio for me. From that patio I have two steps up to the next bit of garden. I use the metal arch as support as I step up, works a treat! Handrails don’t have to be utilitarian, annabellaamy’s example show that. Here’s my “support arch” 😊 and an example of a rustic wooden rail and a lovely forged metal one.

2.7m is too narrow for a lounge, especially if it's also a passage to the garden room. (And two seating areas next to eachother might feel off.)

Is your floorplan how the current layout is right now? And are you renovating the whole or just considering where the kitchen could go? Family size?

When completely overhauling the house and budget is no issue, I'd say move the bedrooms to the lounge and create a large open plan near the garden.

Hi rinked. The floor plan walls are the current layout for the main body of the bungalow. There is no garden room or bedroom across the back. The wardrobe plus en-suite area is a 2.5 x 4.5 garage, bedroom 3 is the kitchen 2x3.5 and the washing machine space is a w/c. A full renovation was needed and after two weekends of dismantling little remains. Needs putting back together now 😄. There is just two of us with up to six some weekends. I don’t mind the layout, it would be nice to have some living space connection with the garden and make use of the garage as it needs repair work. Adding a sofa bed in bedroom 2 to use as a lounge/occasional bedroom as it has patio doors onto the garden then put the kitchen in the living space, making the old kitchen an office/small bedroom 3 would be enough for me. Would that keep it saleable? Sadly I do need to keep budget in mind although can stretch to some works.

What roof does the bungalow have and how high? Would going up be an option, for two spare bedrooms only? The current house is 13m long? And how is the plot layout, how much garden space around each side?

It is a shallow pitched roof running the 12m length of the property. It is not possible to stand up in the loft space. local applications to go up were refused planning. There is a one meter wide walkway along the bathroom side of the property and the garage is next to the neighbours plot. Both the front and rear garden are 9.5 wide x 9.

Tried to recreate your floorplan and added to that. If just the two of you, I don't think you need two bathrooms, but a separate loo is nice. The living became master bed and bathroom, garage and kitchen two extra beds, added a bit of hallway. Bathroom became utility. Kitchen and diner in the back with a lounge in the new extension. Haven't placed much windows, but you know where they are and/or should go. :).

Hi, can I ask you posted a photo of kitchen last year with Ammonite, our beck stone etc. Can you clarify what colours you used where…island/walls/units/architrave? It looked lovely. Many thanks.
