Design Dilemma DIY Gardens

Garden design advice (help)

This is my garden, its pretty rubbish and im looking for advice, suggestions on how we could improve it without spending £1000’s i.e. the diy approach. the shed needs ripping down and the garage has a leaky roof, so potential to rennovate into a garden office/summer house…all ideas welcome on where to start. oh and would you take out the trees? Thanks!

Whatever you do, don't remove the trees. All gardens need at least one tree imo.

It needs more planting, but what you already have looks lovely. A cabin sounds a great idea. The path looks a bit like an agility course though, so I would create a path running along the right hand border. Something wider and more accessible rather like this. Sandstone pavers are lovely.

Hi Ellie, ok I will edit it more as it should read we want all the shrubs and trees removed which is a tall feat when your not qualified I would guess. Also with the council not available to remove garden waste, we already have a lot piling up with the compost awaiting the date for when we can remove it. Our garden already has fence all the way around, however it needs updating as it has broken it a lot of places.

I like the plants Sonia suggested. We can't see the rest of the garden, but I have a feeling it would benefit from some clear shapes. I mean, if you for example give the lawn a clear shape, maybe a circle, and plant around it, it will often make a huge change and look so much better. And it's such a simple thing to do. But I'm only speculating based on the part where the grass meets the path. Also, add loads of organic matter to the soil if you plant your new plants. Lots and lots of compost works wonders.

Hi there Sarah, It looks like a nice blank canvas in there! It looks like it is in a slope. Is this area levelled? If it isnt, you should factor in the cost of levelling it out if you are thinking about using it as a seating area as moving soil out can be a bit of a dent in the budget. There are some options to hard paving such as gravel etc. You could also use some of the area for plant beds, which would add interest to your seating area. It is also important to keep the rest of the garden in mind when designing this area so that they are tied together! I offer a range of online based garden design services to fit different budgets. A new full width garden room (with two compartments, one toys/tools, one office/lounge) and some tidying up, new paving, would make it look so much better! Keep the trees, for height.

North facing? Might want to create a patio in front of the new 'shed'. Perhaps a pergola or shrubs/hedge to turn the back into a small somewhat private retreat.

With smaller kids, I wouldn't make the garden layout too complicated. We also went for a squared off lawn, border with flowers on the right, border with veggies on the left, plus a patio for all our wheelie bins.. When kids grow older you can remove some lawn and widen the borders.
