Who do I need to complete my kitchen project

Hi All
I want to knock down a dining room wall and knock out a chimney breast to create an open plan kitchen with bifolding doors out into the garden.
Do I need an architect to draw out the plan. Who is needed to decide which walls are safe to knock down

A structural engineer prepares a detailed instruction for how to do it, a builder does the work and the building regs people at the council make sure the builder has done what was required.

For what you are doing it’s likely an architect is unnecessary.

I like your space and the colour of your existing units. Remember to use the "Height" as well as the width. I see "wasted space". To the left of the door as you go in there is a blank wall there that even if you put an inexpensive wine bottle holder to even hold perrier or glasses it will give storage. Elongate the work surface to come into this space but narrow it so it gives the illusion of more work surface if there is room, if not shelves can be fitted. Make the kitchen appear bigger by using the right hand wall before you get to the kitchen entrance to put a large poster/painting either modern or traditional with a nod to the kitchen... ..fruit or still life or whatever floats your boat. This will give the kitchen an "entrance" before you get to it. The small picture at present does not do the wall justice. Do not forget shelves along the top of the window and round door frames which can house pretty glasses, cups or bottlesetc. Try and include a Mirror or mirror backed shelf opposite the main window to reflect light and space. Shelves instead of those long cupboards will give as much space, will be cheaper and prettier and can hold pans or whatever you like and give a cafe bohemian vibe. Don't go for lots of little shelves here but long "landscape" shelves. If you do this then in the wasted space by the door create a different angle by having long shaped shelves "portrait". Really try and include a mirror somewhere or just outside the kitchen. People forget to include paintings and mirrors in kitchens and bathrooms and they really work hard even in a small space and can even be hung just above the work space. Above all have fun. Get the basic units in and then individualise. It doesn't have to be done all at once. In a small space remember things really "sing". Don't have neutral walls...have a depth of colour that will give the room gravitas and cosiness. Remember...large things, conversely, look good in a small space. Remember all rooms contain a "living" thing.....a jug of tipsy tulips, foliage in a jam jar, plump oranges, limes or lemons in a junk shop bowl..... I envy you this space it is sweet and for the minimum of fuss you can really individualise it and make it "yours". Take down those wall cupboards Now and see the difference and the room will start "talking" to you. I can't see the right hand side but is there room in the corner there for a big fridge out of the sightlines of the gorgeous window? A Long larder cupboard could also go at the end here if there is room and remember you can have narrower cupboards as well as the usual width.

I would put the pair of glass candle lamps together on the right side chest and opt for sidelamps with more oomph - something bigger and squat. You could also add other ornaments in different heights grouped together - don't split matching items too symmetrically, balance is key but symmetry may be boring. A geometrically patterned rug or two will look nice alonside the bed and/or at the foot of it. A narrow console unit would look nice beneath the tv; you could go for vintage as your style is very simple. Don't be afraid to dare a little - playing safe is not always the safest!!! Add a comfy reading chair with lampstand and cushions and a footwarmer or plaid on the bed and some more wall art - the heart is a great start but add more. Think layers. You have a great basic palate to funk it up a lot!

Product Design - best subject ever ;) As to your project - are you talking about a permanent fixture or something that could be mobile? Who are you aiming this product at - people who potter, or professionals? Is it a luxury product or a more economical model? Could it be a modular piece that could be added to in stages? What will it hold - full size rakes, forks, spades etc or just hand tools, or both? Could the working element (fork/rake etc) be interchangable with a single handle? Think about how that might work (or not) practically. Go to a few garden centres, see how they display their garden tool ranges - notice how some more luxury models are displayed differently to the regular models - what makes the difference? Take photos. Document the research. And talk to a few gardeners - what tools do they use the most? (Me - the secateurs, rake and the bin/wheelbarrow). Make up a simple questionairre, distribute it to friends and neighbours (or their parents!) Perhaps list a couple of rough options to choose from and get participants to choose a favourite, giving reasons why. As good quality tools can lifetime they would be considered naturally environmentally friendly - avoid plastic if possible or practical. Oh and make sure you presention boards & documents are flawless. Check that spelling. Use lots of illustrations and diagrams. Show it’s an amazing product - it should sell itself. Hi, we purchased Lerhyttan light grey last year for the kitchen and absolutely love it! Just in case you want a paint colour that goes well with it too, I splashed out for Farrow & Ball 'Wevet'. It's very close to white but isn't. We have a white ceiling and you can easily see a difference in colour. It keeps the kitchen looking light. We have a wooden floor and a wooden worktop, plus put in a welsh slate windowsill and then some dark blue roller blinds. It all looks fantastic. One thing my partner did is make a 'pull out' cup ard from normal drawers and doors. It is fab, so much so that he's going to make me another as you can get right to the back of the cupboard. Why Ikea does not promote these hacks I do not know. To fit everything in, my partner also designed a breakfast bar that has the washing machine underneath it on one side (opposite the tumble dryer) and then on the other side of the island is the dishwasher. It's a great use of space as he's closed up a window that looked onto my waterbutts, fence and neighbour's extension and put in more storage for me.. We played with the Ikea planning app for maybe 1/2 a year before taking the plunge. You can really make it work it you just take the time to plan it properly. He wanted to warn you about the price of cover panels though - the large ones are £127 a pop - a huge price for just a bit of coloured wood, and you'll end up using them all over. For under the breakfast bar, he got some MDF and then glued on some floor tiles, cut through the door of the washing machine and saved us approx £220! (Came to £40 instead of £260). One thing that I cannot stress enough is that it's REALLY worth looking for returns in the 2nd hand bit. You can pick up doors at a completely bargain price so always go and have a look. Ours still isn't finished as we're doing it ourselves (so please excuse the floor protector), but it looks completely amazing already compared to what it was before! Our friends love it. Lights are from Ikea too. Go for Lerhyttan. Good luck!
