Paint Design Dilemma DIY

What paint to use on wall panelling?

Hello We in the process of doing wall panelling on our bedroom wall. I want it all the same colour, walls and wood. What's the best process here? Prime the timber and then what paint to use on the wall and timber pls?

I’m not totally sure, but as there is wood involved I would use eggshell or satinwood. I would also paint a couple of coats of primer first.

Either undercoat or prime first. Depending on what colour you are after if it's a standard off the shelf colour then most should be suitable - I have always found F&B to offer great coverage and consistency painting both wall and wood. Otherwise I cannot recommend Little Greene enough they have some great colours and paints suitable for wood and walls.

Companies like Valspar etc offer more bespoke colour options and can alter the paint base to suit a variety of materials :)

Pro's of MDF : less expensive as can DIY Doesn't move Easy to paint Quick to do Cons: Its so simple to do - getting someone else in to do it is pure indulgence !!! Plan it on paper and ask your local dIY shed to cut the MDF to size ! Then tack it on the wall ! Fill the tack holes and paint ! Hey presto - job done

I think an earthy colour with a green tone would work well. You can see the colour I used came out somewhat darker than shown, Crowns darker shade is "expectation " which may work. I don't know whether it would also be worth looking at Farrow and ball mouse's back or the lighter "light grey". I also like colourhappy's suggestion for trailing plants. I think as eyes are drawn to light, the plants would "point" it's way to the panelling so to speak? Apologies, I can't photoshop so the only plants I could photoshop look like swamp monsters 😂 I think the cushions work well too.

Thanks so much to you all for taking the time to make comments. It seems unanimous that we should keep the panelling! I’m leaning toward painting it (partly because I think it’ll be less work than stripping it!) and I really like some of the colour suggestions, I’ll order some paint samples! My picture shows the brightest part of the hallway and makes the panelling look paler than it is near the stairs, the panelling is actually all dark like at the back of the photo. Away from the door the hallway is quite dark so I’m not sure whether dark colours will be too much, I’ll see what I think when the samples arrive.

A hammer, chisel and then plaster skim... Seriously - I have yet to speak with a customer who has tried such "refreshes" who has been happy with the result. There is always a first time for everything, though...

As above, Prime and use a Farrow and Ball, they do a modern emulsion which is a good all round paint.

Don’t forget to treat every knot and fill every hole made by cracks and every imperfection in the wood in order to get a better painted end result

I’ve had exactly the same thought on type of paint given the wood and the wall!!! A friend has just used Lick paint because it can be used on both. I’ve not used it myself - but they seem to have nice colours and are v popular on Instagram.

I’d use an eggshell as your final coat, it’s much more durable and panelling can get rather dusty so it‘s easier to clean. i’ve used Little Greene water based intelligent eggshell on my kitchen walls and also on DIY panelling
