Revamp of a bungalow

Help! We have just had our bungalow painted white, which looks SO much better. I need some ideas with what to do with the front driveway to improve the country look? The tarmac is awful! Any suggestions are more than welcome! We live in a teeny tiny hamlet surrounded by beautiful thatched houses and countryside, so don't want to go ultra modern.

I think gravel driveways work well with rural properties. You can install plastic grids to hold it in place (just got some for my back garden), and it comes in a variety of colours.

Is this your house? It’s beautiful. I’m contemplating digging up some of the tarmac at the front and making a flower bed to soften the front with some greenery/trellis plants. The gravel looks lovely.

Hi, Renovation of an existing house, when involving demolition of existing walls, is more complex than can be shown from sketch plans. Ideally, to create the impression of more space, an open plan arrangement works best. Consider larger openings with wide barn type or pocket doors between all the living spaces. The positioning of flush doors is also very important when dealing with small spaces, if in a bad position, the opening door could ruin the potential use of space (see door into smaller bedrooms in the last sketch). I suggest pocket doors are worth the investment in your home. The conservatory could really help the transition to outside, bringing the garden inside. Consider large openings here to increase connection and daylight. Conservatories tend to be cooler so invest in good detailing and materials here. Reconsider your brief. If possible, combine two spaces into a larger one, i.e. guest room / study, or a larger bedroom for 2 kids rather than 2 small ones. And lastly, discuss your concerns with your architect, and trust that they have all the information and are best qualified to advise you. Best of luck with your project!

Hi I'm looking for advice to get light into my dining room. its a1960s bungalow that has had a huge extension at the back. this had made the middle of the house very dark. I was thinking of making the window on the right full length and adding a full length window to the right of the fireplace. we obviously plan to replace the fireplace! I would paint the bookcase and the the wall in a similar grey to your armchair,Create "boxes" by painting some shelves pale grey and a couple in mustard . Maybe back one box in mirror glass to put some coloured glasses/decanters on as a drinks unit. Put your pale mustard photo frame into the darker box and collect interesting items using the same colour theme. Hope that helps!

Hello joolstc, I like the tiles! I think they just need a bit of attention perhaps they could be replaced or painted something like brick and tile paint and the colour they should be rather than anything else here. I definitely feel these have an impact on the style and I would not remove them unless you were to replace them as they are. They add texture to the house and are actually rather interesting with the cladding... What is not so attractive is the upvc. If you can't replace this aspect you can paint it! There are companies that supply a range of colours and you can breathe new life into this facade with a darker colour for example.. Add some plants and architectural foliage.. I can see a monkey puzzle or something equally interesting on that piece of grass... Some large pots either side of the front door and possibly something green in the windows either side of the two large opening windows.. Fiddle leaf figs would look wonderful... Consider something quite large for a room setting... Large vertical blinds would be great for the whole house and I'd definitely keep these.. Now I'm moving on to the idea of what's inside the house! : ))

Have you looked at resin? I think it can go over tarmac - and there are lots of really lovely coloured gravel options too.

On a different note (and please don’t take offence!) - I think the style of windows aren’t quite right - and certainly not for a country look.

Oh definitely not! I hate the windows. We only moved in, in December and we’re trying to do it up as cheap as we can at the mo. Replacing the windows is definitely on the agenda in the future! Only the front ones have the lead in and then the back are half upvc and half wood. It’s such a mish mash!

Hi Danni, no that isn't my house unfortunately. Flower beds are definitely a great idea.
