I’m looking for an open room-divider

Hi I love this open shelving used as a room divider. Is it bespoke or off the shelf (excuse the pun). I’m looking for similar to break up a through lounge/diner in a late 60s semi but don’t want to block out the sun that pours through both rooms and it needs to be slim. Hi Sue, Thanks for reaching out and apologies for the delay! This was made bespoke by us for the space. I would suggest contacting a local joiner who may be able to build you something similar but to size. If this isn't an option for you try Wayfair for example. If you find something that isn't quite the right size I would recommend that you go smaller and fit a frame around it which you can then paint in with your room colour. Whatever you do make sure it is securely fixed so an accidental knock doesn't send it and contents over you!

I'd build the wall out the 350mm to incorporate a 250mm built in shelving cupboard on one side. Then at the back have a pocket (opening) for a pocket door to go into. So whichever side the recess is on you see a bookcase and doors when shut. With the other side plastered. You'd have to go down to one door to allow for it to travel behind the wall. If you need to keep the space open due to light levels, then shelves with an interesting display would work well, a glass divide/window can look odd on an internal wall, if you are not careful, although, depending on the rest of the house, the crittal window might look interesting too. Stained glass would have to look good on both sides and could be very expensive. I like the look of the climbing rope diy on the stairs, it might be worth trying that idea too. Please don't go with the fish tank, horrible expensive out of place smelly things in a nice clean home, they remind me of pet shops! It really boils down to what you like the look of best, if you really have to keep the space open, just don't forget there is nothing wrong with feeling warm in your home and there is more chance of that if you don't feel a blast of cold air every time the front door is opened, so don't rule out a proper wall if it at all possible.

Find out about where and when your local 'Open Studios' event is happening. In many parts if the country artists open up their houses and studios to the public and you can buy work directly from them. This is a very ethical way of buying art as many artists really struggle financially and rely on this window of opportunity.

Technically bi-fold doors aren't old fashioned and work well in Scandinavian, Japanese, Japandi and other more minimalist interiors. Crittall internal doors are like blue jeans, they never go out of style even though they have been around for a long time. French doors with alot of glass are also old fashioned, but are considered a classic design approach that again, won't go out of style. Also French doors come a vast array of styles such as Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Farmhouse, Coastal, etc, so you can match them to pretty much any room style and make them look like a wise statement piece. Sliding barn style doors are fashionable 'to a degree', depending if your interior design is rustic, industrial or very wood heavy. Most UK houses are of an older style, so classic solutions such as French doors is usually the better way to go as it compliments the house and gives you the most flexibility. Keep in mind however that you can also divide rooms with dual direction fireplaces and large pieces of furniture as well.
