Get rid of dormer windows?

Hello, we are buying old semi detached bungalows with the dormer windows. The walls have been knocked through so it’s now a detached although doesn’t look it (house similar to the picture)
Is there anyway you can get rid of the windows/make it look more like a detached house? Would this be a very expensive job?
I really love the house but hate the exterior!

I'm sure it can easily be done...just need to ask a few questions....

Do you have a budget ? Would you be changing any of the inside layout ? Do you need 2 front doors ?

If you’re asking can you get rid of the dormer windows, then yes. In our road there were 3 houses that had dormers and we have all got rid of them because it restricted the space in the bedroom. We did ours first, then next door but one, then next door. You will have to change the roof line but it is a job that a decent builder can do.

Hi Scott, Sorry it's been a little while since you posted this. Hopefully I can offer a little advice. You're right, shutters won't fold flat in your space. Of course, if you're set on shutters, you could still have them. If you chose wide louvres (to let lots of light in) and opted for a hidden tilt rail for a clean, uncluttered feel, you could simply tilt the louvres to let the light in in the day. However, as you say you'd want them open in the day, bi-fold shutters may still be an option. It does however look like you still wouldn't have room for these to open fully, but instead the shutters may open and get stuck. If you went for shutters in the recess and had them open to a 90 degree angle, this could be an option though. Alternatively, if these sound like compromises you're not willing to make, why not try Wooden blinds with tape? They have a continental feel that many people feel mimics shutters, and are of course a cheaper alternative. You could also opt for a faux Wood for the bathroom, along with tape, to keep the look both coordinated and practical. Hope that helps, and good luck with your search, Zoe

I have been given planning permission for a habitable room in the loft. One of the planning rules stipulates that the window opening must be at least 1.7m above floor level. I can't get my head around how you would get out of the room if there was a fire below and you could not use the stairs. I guess you could smash a window but not sure my 5 year old would be strong enough. Has anyone had any experience of such rules? Any help would be much appreciated.

Wood cladding was my first thought too when I saw your house. Maybe mix cladding and render to reduce costs. Perhaps new porch could be render with some cladding elsewhere? Maybe cladding on reconfigured dormers? Whoever is designing your porch etc could do a mock up??

If I was your neighbour and you were changing the roof line of your house this way and changing the streetscape I would be very unhappy. Permitted development or not I would urge you to find a way of keeping your hipped roof as it is one of the most attractive features of houses built in this era.
