How to decorate narrow corridor to mitigate dirt/damage on the walls?

My Victorian hallway is essentially just a very long, narrow corridor. It's extremely difficult to avoid brushing the walls with wet winter coats, pushchairs, luggage, etc. The obvious solution is to find wall paint with a wipeable finish, but I wonder if there are clever things we can do beyond that to make these walls easier to maintain. For example – would a dark colour hide the marks? Would some kind of cladding (e.g. shiplap) be more hardy than plain walls? Is there something I'm not thinking of?
