Where to put grand piano in new house

I inherited a grand piano a year ago, we’re currently in a flat and was put in our spare bedroom/office. We’re moving in a few weeks and want to be able to put it in one of the living spaces but we are struggling to find a good spot for it. The piano at it’s widest is 150cm, 180cm long.

We are looking to eventually remodel the downstairs as it hasn’t been update since is was built in the early 1990s. So open to ideas with the current existing layout and a future layout. One of the issues is the number of big doors, they are mainly glass and I think has been designed to let as much of the light through to the north facing rooms.

I would be tempted to place it in the dining room. Do you actually use it?

That’s what we were thinking, probably next to the sliding door. It probably gets used once a week but has significant sentimental value as it was my grandmothers.

Do you have a separate living room? If you do, rather than add a small sofa I'd be tempted to go for a long rectangular table and add a banquette seat one side so you've got a comfy seat to watch tv. I've just found a couple of pics showing wishbone chairs with banquettes so ignore colour/style. Rugs do look great under dining tables although personally I wouldn't have one re cleaning! If you did add a sheepskin on a chair you're bringing in texture that waŷ. Re wood, I'd either go for a similar grain or pick one of the tones in the oak . I think the door works with the floor but you would be able to lighten it if wanted

Any electrical work in the kitchen is covered by part P of the building regs and can only be carried out by an approved and registered electrician or a supervised competent person and then tested afterwards, building control then notified and either a major or minor works report submitted. So i'd speak to a registered electician and discuss what you'd like and he will advise what you can have so the work is carried out safely. I don't know about not fitting the switches above or below the appliance, not heard that before, the only regulation i've seen is having sockets behind integrated appliances, above below or in the unit next to it is fine as far as i'm aware, so long as its accessable.

Thanks for coming back. We are planning to rework the first floor too (so creating a master plan for the house) but only executing the ground floor first budget wise initially. Have attached existing first floor and also 2 plans for first floor. First idea was essentially just building about the ground floor playroom extension - however having thought about that more, that might be a poor decision light wise for a NE facing rear. So we have a second option, that only half builds about the playroom, and then essentially creates a double extension on the left...but we will ever have the money to do 2 extensions upstairs and and could also mean our ground floor extension is dark. Another dialemia. So to cut a long story short, upstairs layout is not firm.

Hi Olivia,

reading your post and looking at the plan of your future home, I imagined a large single room, in which the piano (which I love madly) is the absolute protagonist, so it covers a central position.

You talk about redesigning the layout of the ground floor, and although I don't know the physical limits of the building and I don't know what can be knocked down or not, I think that a single room, divided only by the furniture, with a good interior design, makes your apartment magical.

I leave you, therefore, this sketch to think about. Good work!

I envision a reading/music area with bookshelves (in green), a double-sided sofa (like the one in the photo) and a living area with a classic TV sofa. I envision the entryway with a built-in closet, which can serve you as a pantry emptier or space for shoes and coats.

Wow Erica! This is really cool! Thank you so much for taking the time to think about it. I had been reluctant to get rid of the entrance way but I love your suggestion and think it would work really well.

I would also put it in the dining room, with a couple of armchairs and some bookshelves, maybe a little bar cart, could be a lovely chill out room!

for the future layout change I would consider knocking through kitchen/utility and extend utility to meet at back for one large kitchen diner. have utility area in the back part of garage, with a door to new kitchen diner if possible.
