Remove skirting board?

Hello,

We are looking to install a "hidden door" which will open via concealed hinges. I think we've cracked the design for it but in order to make this disappear properly, the joiner has advised us to remove the skirting board from this wall so the door fits in seamlessly with the wall. The guy who's plastering is happy to plaster to the floor (it's the original floorboards), but are there any issues with this re. damp or movement of the wall?

When we googled it, we came across advice to use a stop bead or shadow gap but then got a bit out of our depth trying to work out what this is and if we needed it.

Can anyone help at all please?

Put a stop bead about 3mm off the floor. This will alleviate any movement from floor to plaster

One of reasons we use skirting boards is because plaster is weakest at its edge. If the edge is exposed even light taps like those from a vacuum will cause it to break and fall off as well as leave scuff marks. Skirting board covers this delicate edge. If the skirting is removed you need some other way to protect the edge this is usually done with a stop bead.

I have seen examples of houses where they have been plastered to the floor without any stop bead, but these are ultra modern minimalist new builds. No idea what it looks like once people (and a vacuum cleaner) have lived there.

If your house is concrete floors and brick walls like these new builds, you should be able to do it without the stop bead. Otherwise probably better to keep it off the floor.

You would still need architrave for the edge of the tiles to finish to around the door frame but not necessary to fit skirting if all the walls are to be tiled.

Personally I think it looks better if the skirting is removed and flooring put underneath. When replacing the skirting cut down to allow for the height of the new floor under the pipes and machine the round on to the cut edge. Looks a professional finish and the fact that someone would take the time to do it this way is always going to score points on selling. Hope this helps.

I would key it and then use Zinsser, it's shellac based, and although not pleasant to use, it makes paint adhere to glossy surfaces. I personally find F&B irritating as (although I do sometimes use it) I find it too thin and doesn't cover well. Thanks Sue. I wasn’t very clear - it’s not so much the kitchen heating we’re thinking about, it’s the dining room. The radiator is on the wall we want to knock through.

Continue the skirting board on the door. There will be a seam anyway.

You could have shadow gap skirting so the skirting is in line with the plaster board and then have your joiner route the same line across the bottom of the door. This is assuming the door is of a solid timber construction.
