New lounge with awkward fireplace- help!

I’m hoping someone can help me with this place. We are about to move into our new home which is in need of some much renovation. I don’t know what to do with the fireplace in the current sitting room- it sits on an awkward angle. Do I completely remove it and make that wall a tv wall? Can I have both: a working wood burning fire and a tv positioned safely somewhere on that wall? Any help appreciated. Thank you.

It's a lovely light room but certainly a tricky one to furnish given the configuration of door with windows. Lesley345 is right that the easiest way to deal with it would be to consider it as a room of two halves to either side of the door. Then you can give each end a function so potentially the area to the left of the door where the TV is now could be a seating area and could take a corner sofa, while the opposite end could be more about watching the TV in the alcove and have a couple of comfortable chairs which could be easily adjusted in a situation where the TV was off and you had a larger group of friends/family around. you would then want to tie it all together by using a large rug to visually bring it all together. You could also look at having a projector rather than a TV and using the large white wall at one end to project onto. If watching TV isn't actually that important to you then you could create a seating area centrally to the room with the windows as the focal point and statement storage units/art work/piano at the ends of the room. It's not necessary to have furniture backed up against the walls and placing items centrally instead could help free up the way you consider the space. The key thing to do is to consider the activities that you want to do in the room most of the time and then decide on the furniture you need to support those activities, particularly considering ways to make things flexible and possibly multifunctional. Does anyone actually play the piano? If not move it out of the room. If yes can you move it to the "awkward space"behind the "awkward door", I hope it wont hinder access to the 2 light switches in that corner. Can the door near the armchair be made to open outwards instead of inwards into the living room? If yes then move the piano to that area instead repacing the armchair. Once piano is out of the way try and see if dining table can be rotate to fit in that space, if so you will have gained some space in the living area. Get rid of the fireplace and mirror and wall-mount the TV in that position. Will allow TV to be seen from seating position and minimise glare or backlight in case you open the windows in the dining area or in the sitting area. If you placed the piano in the armcahir's place you can keep the current sofa and its configuration. Move armchair to current TV console position. This will create a centre area for kids. It would appear to me your kids are quite young. You might consider investing in a thick heavy rug to place in the central place area. For side tables i would suggest nesed sidetables which you can keep in one area and remove and use as an when needed. (inserting an image later) If you moved the piano in the awkward space. I would suggest investing in a new slimer sofa or instead in a series of discrete seperate armscahirs whcih can be moved about easily. Oh and too maximise space i would have gotten rid of the table based lighting and preferred wall mounted ones. Similarly wall fixed shelves rather than tables, especially with babies to avoid the risk of things being pulled over. (one of the other reason i would suggest wall mounting the TV rather than getting another console).

Dear Caroline, Congratulations on your new flat! Not wanting to assume, are the steps leading downstairs to the kitchen start as you enter the room? Couple of things for you to consider: - Storage unit on the other side of the stair (is there a bannister/wall/railing?); please do send through pictures. It might be possible to fit in a bookcase as a divider (recommend a low one and to accessorise the top, for example, with a vase, lamp, picture frames and candles. - Your lounge area is not that small; however, rather than a couch and a chair, have you considered an L-shaped sofa, with a coffee table in front of it and a TV unit across on the opposite wall. - What is your budget and preferred design style? - What is the flooring? I don't see why not leave the fireplace where it is now and still do what you want - a false chimney breast built with an electric fire and TV built into it.
