Patio concrete slab advice

Hello! Looking for advice related to this small awkward concrete slab. I am getting the rest of the patio sealed and can get the slab painted/sealed as well - which I think would at least help it blend better. I was thinking a shade of white. Also generally not sure how to use this space. I have other spaces for outdoor dining and an outdoor sectional. Thank you!

If it is a different height than the patio you would want it to be a contrasting color so people dont trip over it or misstep stepping down. Make it clear that it is a different height.

Have you chosen your indoor tiles yet? There are a few tiles on the market these days that are suitable for both indoor and outdoor. If you have chosen your indoor tiles, would they also be the right colour for outside, and what is their 'cleanability' / longevity for not gathering moss etc ? I think for me, hardwood decking would suit the house as would big slabs.So it's down to personal choice. Smaller slabs may look a little dwarfed outside with such a good size of garden. Slabs will look great sat on top of brick steps. Can I see the outside there being clad in timber due to all the horizontal lines on the plan? If so, then decking would not be my first choice as it would potentially clash with the cladding. You may also end up looking like you have a great big wooden log cabin with the cladding and decking. So, I think for a traditional look, to tie in with the style of house, it would be large slabs on brick to match those in the house already.

Good quality and cheap don't really sit that easily together I am afraid. Forzaitala is right in that you can get cheap sandstone for the price she indicates. Beware though as the cheaper stuff is often softer and absorbs more water. The softness doesn't mean it will wear out, but it does mean that it will also absorb stains more easily as well as water. The water also means that it is easier for algae to grow and penetrate the surface of the stone and for dirt to be ground in. This makes it much harder to clean. People tend to forget that patios do need at least an annual jetwash and if the surface gets dirtier more quickly then you have to increase this frequency. Another thing to remember about the cost of the stone is that this only represents a small part of the patio cost unless you are laying it yourself. A patio costs around £200-220 per square meter laid and so labour makes up a large part of the cost. Similarly as Forzaitala says, uncalibrated stone gets very expensive to lay because the sub-base has to take account of the different thicknesses of each paver - so avoid it unless you are looking for something like reclaimed old Yorkstone. Cheap stone can also be a false economy in other ways too - I recall a client who sourced cheap stone only to find that it wasn't quite flat and so had lots of trip hazard edges and places for water to pool when it had been laid. A word of warning on concrete slabs. The cheaper they are the worse they will be - this is both in appearance and wearing. After a few years small bits of concrete wear away and you can see the gravel that was in the mix standing out - looks horrible. Finally - don't forget outside Porcelain - can be cost effective and very hard wearing and easier to clean. A good supplier for the South East is London Stone, or CED nationally.

You will need to dig down to lay Type 1 first, a kind of rough stones, this is then whacked down with a whacker, then your paving choice is cemented on top, This gives a good sound base. A decent landscaper will do it this way. If you have planting beds around it the water will drain off into them. To improve the soil in the beds you can mix in good topsoil or compost and horticultural grit. There are some plants that love wet soil so you can still have a wonderfully lush garden. Those one step down set ups are bonafide tripping hazards. Creating a contrasting but integrated look is going to be your best bet .

You can achieve this by introducing a modern look by covering the concrete with a hardwood like deck landing ( ipe wood or the like) .

Or you could use a hybrid of materials such as using the same stone on the field of the landing and a strong constrasting accent at the edge of the one step riser.

I believe that simply painting the full area an analogous color, such as the white or creme color, is not going to provide you with a enough contrast to allow the eye to pick up that there is single step downward. A banding of contrasting material or color is needed at the edge to alert the brain into registering the grade change.

A tricky challenge for sure. Best of luck.

I agree with Derviss - this is an ankle-breaker. Box it over, as he/she suggested, with wood that matches the privacy fence I see in the background.

1. As a crazy plant lady, I would say add a planter/ bench on the short end and add plants and maybe big pots. Bench could be a storage deck box for towels or just a fence wood box to hold self-watering planting tubs with easy care herbs or succulents. Then do the wood as Derviss suggest.
