We have the same type of panelling in our hall and it was oak the same as yours with an oak floor. It just started to feel quite dark and drab but we hesitated to to do anything for fear of messing it up. In the end we painted all the panelling in Farrows French grey, left the doors and floors wood and painted the sides of our staircase and the spindles in Farrows clunch but left the newel posts and the bannister rail as wood - looks like a different hallway - I have never regretted painting it

Fabulous ideas everyone, keep them coming:-) Carolina, my first thought was also a mirror, maybe an antique style one. Definitely something to think about. Minnie101, I love your inspiration as always, love the blue cameo box image, will definitely test out some decoupage on the little bedside cabinet. To all, must say I’m not much for chalk paint, never liked the feel of it although you can get some good effects plus you can always varnish/wax over it. Just feel for this piece I neeeed colour! Our hallway can get rather gloomy at the best of times (north facing with only the door for daylight). I do love natural wood but the cabinet, although nicely shaped is just cheap pine and not the best quality. I didn’t pay much for it so feel justified in painting it. Emily, i’ll probably get the Land Rover enamel paint just because I want to see how it compares to standard gloss, watch this space! Here’s my inspo pic for hallway although ours hasn’t got the side bit round the stairs, it’s slightly wider and we need storage for bike and shoes etc.

It's a really lovely hall. Loving Carolina's suggestions. Also, do the doors have a threshold that you could temporarily remove and look under (then put back) to see the floor underneath (if you see what I mean)? That way you could find out fairly quickly if you had tiles or wood. @ E D - unfortunately they may do a good product but a web site that comes across as a dodgy spam site doesn't make anyone want to find out. :(

I totally agree with Sonia - houses like that are built to outlast us. The wood is fighting against the butter coloured floor and stark white walls. Sonia's carpet choices are great. For the walls, you definitely should avoid stark white and you can either soften them down to a more beige hue or go bolder and make them gleam with a dull yellow like F&B Sudbury Yellow, which changes with the light. I think it's a great opportunity to have fun and do something out of the ordinary. You could almost experiment and fill in some of the panels with a bold wallpaper. At most, if you can't live with all of the wood (but give it a chance!) you could maybe whitewash the beams and paint the doors - it doesn't have to be all or nothing. I'd have fun with it - not many people get the chance to live in such a characterful home!
