tiles on mantel

It appears as if two tiles are attached to the mantel on either side. Can you please explain how that would be attached? Or provide a picture?

Thanks for your message, and your interest in Motawi Tileworks! It appears that these tiles were recessed into the custom millwork, and we would recommend adhering them in this application using Liquid Nails. I hope that this helps, but please let me know if we can be of further assistance!

Perhaps you could use the mantle elsewhere - even faux fireplaces can make for a nice focal point if you need a feature in your newly repositioned living room? I also think the way a house 'flows' is one of the most important elements of how well a space 'fits' it's owner. You've got to make it work for you and the way you like to live, if that means switching some of the rooms round then absolutely go ahead. Especially if it's going to be a long term or forever home.

Hi, the only thing I would say is put the fire on and see how hot it gets. We have a gas inserted fire, a little bit like yours but it really belts out the heat. We had an oak mirror on the wall above it and it got so hot we were really concerned that it would burn! We didn't want a full mantel piece so we bought an oak "shelf" to absorb the heat, then put the mirror above that. Now I am not worried about the mirror. I still have to switch the fire off after a couple of hours as the wood "shelf" gets really hot, but I am not worried that anything of value will get damaged. If the shelf gets a bit black (it hasn't so far) I won't mind. I definitely would not put a TV over a fire for all the above reasons. Hope that helps a little.

Sonia - thanks for your reply. The photo was a bit misleading in that the units and island are actually cream not white and the worktop we have chosen is not plain white but has flecks of grey in it as well as a few bits of silver sparkle. See photo below. I like your sisters kitchen but the main warmth I feel comes from the lovely wooden floor which obviously we do not have. I thought with the worktop and floor tiles both having grey in them, that would link in with having the units painted grey as we want a change from the cream. See tiled floor photo below. My main question was whether to incorporate a colour such as yellow ochre on a wall as an accent colour or have the walls a pale shade of grey and use say blinds, cushions and maybe a splash back in yellow. We don’t want to paint over the pine dresser or doors as all our doors are pine so both sides would have to be the same and it would then look odd in the hallway against the other doors. Our house is a farmhouse style hence all the pine and outdated or not we quite like it! 😜
