We have cheap pale grey riven laid in a contemporary style which looks great. No problem with algae or flaking. It is also more allowing for the usual garden dirt due to its texture. The sawn looks lovely if you are really careful about keeping it clean. The riven somehow looks a little less austere - good for us as it looks neat but is forgiving when it comes to dog paw prints, foot prints etc....

I wonder if the chemical used on Ugly House was Oxalic acid? It’s used for lightening wood and I used it to remove black marks on my oak worktop. It did the job really well. It is derived from rhubarb leaves and is sold in crystal form which is then mixed with water. You must wear gloves, goggles and a mask as the crystal form is dangerous if inhaled. I was terrified when mixing it! It is used a lot by carpenters and wood workers.

I've never noticed one way or another about stains as such - that said, we're not that bothered about it looking pristine, as we're quite rural and we live in a Cotswold stone former farmhouse with a country garden, so it's more a case of function over appearance for us. But we've never had anything that we've noticed as a horrific mark though. Consequently, I've just sent the OH to do a test on a spare piece of paving, with some neat Ribena, we left it about 20 minutes or so and then rinsed it off and yes indeed it did leave a faint stain, so if you're concerned about marks and stains then it's probably best to get it sealed.
