I have a nice size front room/living room which I need help on. It has this huge window at the front of the house and the door is positioned in the middle of the wall....I just dont know where to put my furniture? also where to put tv? and general design ideas for decorating! The pink is nice but I think it might have to go! I want it to look modern and fresh but "together".

I feel at the moment its all over the place. The fireplace is now full white - I painted that.

Ideas please!

Not having measurements…..I think making a cosy corner to the left of the entrance. Two sofas at right angles with a corner table with lamp, coffee table, then a sofa or dining table in front of the big window would balance the room….the tv could either go left of the fire, above the fireplace or in the opposite corner as it is now ….….i think you need to consider the need for some height either with pictures, bookcases etc.

I’d consider keeping the pink and offsetting with green foliage or a soft green wall ….hope this helps

Hi Natalie,

You have a beautiful room to work with. Lots of light and space. Here is what I had in mind for you. The pink as you said, it is nice, but you can definitely go darker as you have three massive windows. I went for "Immersed" by Crown & Elle paints, which is an elegant shade of blue-is grey-ish colour. I have also used Crown & Elle for my whole house and although is not the famous Farrow & Ball, I must say it is of very good quality with great coverage. The "Immersed" shade will also add an elegant finish to the room. When it comes to painting the room, I would paint all four walls and the ceiling in the same shade, for uniformity. This will create more balance with the light furniture.

I went with a natural look for the furniture which will create a nice contrast between the walls and the furniture. The sofa is a 3 seater (I thought that's the size you have in your photos) in a light finish but you can also go slightly darker as I noticed you have a young daughter, though companies now do offer a wide variety of sofa textiles that are stain resistant. You can add a glass and brass coffee table, brass side tables, and a matt white glass with brass finishes for a ceiling light. I don't know how high the ceiling is, but normally in England the houses don't have high enough ceilings for a chandelier. If your room is high enough, you could opt for a chandelier.

I have also noticed that you have some beautiful wooden floors so I chose an oak dining table which can go on the wall where you have the second sofa next to the white timber panel on the wall. If the panel doesn't have a functional purpose and it is only for design, you could remove this and replace it with 4 square photo frames (Ikea has those) and put your favourite family photos in black and white.

The fire place can have the frame changed to a more modern style to match the rest of the scheme - I have included an example for you in my photo.

Soft furnishing such as cushions can include brown leather (for additional texture), light textile and woven fabrics. The rug I have used is the Berala rug from Made.com

In regards to the furniture I have used in this example, all of it is from Made.com except the dining table with is from John Lewis Home.

Hi Laura. Congratulations on the new home! Have you thought about putting the sofa on the back wall and moving the TV to where the sofa is? I think it would work nicely with the shelves. You can then add a floor lamp and picture gallery on the back wall similar to what's pictured with a tall potted plant in the other corner to make a nice focal point. I'd go for a pale grey For the walls, dulux dusted moss 2 is nice but check undertones with your sofa. Your dining chair looks more of a deep coral so would bring a little in for cushions (maybe white and coral patterned to lighten the sofa) and also some texture, a faux sheepskin is always good for a scandi look. You could then add splashes of green or blue for art etc. Some faux stems would be great on the dining table (I like cox and cox's eucalyptus in their glass bottle vase for something simple and they give height). Hard to tell from table pics but could you add an arc light to zone the dining area as you don't have any ceiling lights? Your kitchen looks great, I have to admit if it were mine though I'd be tempted to paint it a soft white and remove some of the wall units and have some shelves instead.

Thanks for all of your advice Carolina. Your right I don’t need another chair in the room, so I will stick with the existing furniture. I do need new curtains and blinds, it’s amazing how different the room looks in your mock up, it really looks great. Dimitry and London Stone are great colours, can you recommend an equivalent in the homebase own brand? I’m thinking of buying a bracket for the tv and moving the tv unit (can I get away with it staying in the room, or should I get rid completely?) so there is more room by the chair. If it’s possible do you recommend the tv on the wall where it is now, above the fireplace or in the corner where it was in my original pics. I’m so undecided it’s ridiculous! I also want to change the lighting in the room, as the existing main lights are not bright enough. Any suggestions on this? I want something that looks fab but isn’t going to hit anyone’s head if they are walking under them. Sorry for all the questions!

To create some cosy - run with the console table, but a narrow one along the short wall as the door opens. If that has a wall sconce light, it can be used to light the table. One in a wood would bring some warmth, so you could go a blonde or a darker wood. Part of the reason you may be feeling a lack of cosines is it is a very stark space - with tiles, no drapes and modernist light fittings - so some texture will help bring warmth. Maybe an entry rug? Or a rug under the dining table? You have a lamp there next to the dining table, it needs something larger to sit on - a sideboard? This could be a modern piece to keep with a simple aesthetic, but again I would consider wood over a metal/glass or marble piece. Don’t rush to fill the space- look for something you really like.

Hmmm.. The pink feels a little too intense for a quiet space. If you are ok with leaving the wall colour, I would think about less intense colors in the furnishings - a more washed out grey or lighter grey in the sofa, swap the lamp shade for something lighter - either a light grey or cream. The walls seem to need filling - empty walls seems to makes the wall color very dominent. You could pick up the gold of the fireplace in frames and consider some soft pastel or cream toned art.

Alternatively, it might be more cost effective to repiant in a softer lighter tone of pink and retain the stronger color in the sofa. Would still swap out the lamp shade though - you could go a stronger shade in the lamp shade but the orange is not the strong shade for your room. A gentler wall color would give you more freedom to go bolder with the color in any art displayed to take the eye higher in the room.

It feels like you have elements of a good scheme - either a strong wall color with lighter furnishings, or strong furnishings with a paler background - but both together are not gelling.

hello and thankyou for the ideas. i have a large kitchen area at the rear of the house where we eat so i don’t want to put another table in this room

the white panel on the wall is a tall radiator so cant move that

would you put curtains up?

and woukd you leave tv in that area? and shall i put it on top of a tv cabinet i dont really like the current stand setup

Curtains... it depends on what feel you want to achieve. The venetian blinds give a modern sleek look, curtains will give a softer overal feel. I probably wouldn't put curtains over the venetians as they are of a more substantial size so are really a feature in and of themselves. Think it's a one or the other situation.

You could have a larger style footstool to act as a coffee table, which would be a soft furnishing for your little one to navigate around when developing walking skills.

Agree that a better TV unit will improve your space, the current one is a bit 'spacey' - it does the job for the moment. The style and finish of a unit will need to be part of your consideration of color. You could do a white unit to be a part of the softening of your strong walls and to tie with the fire surround and venetion blinds. Or you could consider a light grey finish to tie with lighter grey furnishings. Alternatively, if you go the way of a gentler color on the walls you could do a stronger gray on the unit.
