Island hood vs Ceiling hood

Hi All,

We are in the midst of building a new kitchen extension and have decided to install a gas range cooker on the island. We are torn between installing a traditional Island Hood Vs the modern looking ceiling hood and wanted some advise on whats best from an aesthetic and practical standpoint.

Our ceiling height is 2.36m so not so high but more often than not there will be heavy cooking with strong smell taking place.

Any thoughts or feedback is most welcome,

aesthetically one in the ceiling would be preferrable i think, especially with quite a low ceiling. there's also the bora-type option too with the built-in extraction, if you want to spend more money.

Thanks - appreciate your input, will look into your suggestion. Just a small correction on the ceiling height - its actually 2.43m, which im somewhat relieved about. :-)

Thank you Ballycastle. I have considered everything and more! The Gutmann looks lovely, but I really prefer extraction if poss. We have finally decided to go for a Franky Galaxy Slim ceiling extractor without a motor. We will have to have a small false ceiling made, but think this is best as it won't obstruct the views through what is, a fairly large open plan area, to the garden.

Hi Joe, We don't do any island specific cooker hoods, however we do have a 60cm integrated which would need to be boxed in. Here's the details in case this is of any help... A venting hob like the Bora is the best solution, especially if you plan to use an induction hob. A ceiling extractor is discrete, but, if you enjoy cooking and making fumes, a ceiling extractor is not likely to work as well as a good ventilating hob. If you do speak to Westin, I think they will tell you that a ceiling extractor is not the best solution for cooks who like to make lots of vapours, especially with smokey cooking. A ceiling hob is usually too high to be effective for serious cooks, unless it has a very powerful motor and has a deep inclined baseplate, which does not help your issue. A venting hob can extract outside (with forward planning) or, in most cases, recirculate. The expense isn't that high given that you get a hob and extractor in one.

I love your idea. Please don't be swayed into having a huge deep extractor. Your image is stunning. It is so subtle you don't even realise that it is an extractor. I agree about not having it so close when you are cooking. I would say if you use all the zones all the time then you might find it's not powerful enough but most people only use a couple so it should be fine. For me design always trumps practicality. Each to their own. If you cook with lids on pots then you don't always need to use it either.

If you think that a downdraft extractor is unsocial then i'd opt for the ceiling hood, an island hood hanging from the ceiling at about 1m wide at head height [1650mm for gas] would be even worse IMO.
