Improving kerb appeal of our new house
After a few months of uncertainty over buying our new house where we lost it, was in a chain to buy another one only to have it come back to us again… we have finally moved in and have started renovating it.
The lovely couple that owned it before had lived here for 50 years and were keen gardeners. However the climbing trellis (? 🙈) that was in the front door had to be stripped away as our removal men found it impossible to work with. Now we have been left with this ‘ naked ‘ front😳 please help me. How can I make it look good on a budget?

Comments (66)Hi All, Here's an update. The hedges have settled in nicely over the last 4 years (has it really been that long already?!) They had a trim at the weekend, not the best time of year to cut Phontinia I know, but they had gotten a little out of control.. I intend to add a gate over the next few months and continue to plant the beds along the house. They currently have hydrangea and French lavender plants (oh and the odd azalea) in them but need more. Also going to plant a border of box around each of the beds the trees on the lawn are in - hence why these look a little scruffy at the mo.. I've considered growing something on the walls, but still not sure what or how. Each summer I add two hanging baskets either side of the front door - which help break it up a little. Comments (20)Thank you Celerygirl and everyone else. I think I have made my decision now for now. Black !!! I am going to have the door frames, sidelights and door in Black and centralised, the brick work extended at the top of the frame and a roof light installed in the roof. Its exactly what I didn't think I wanted but what sits right with me. Comments (8)Actually, the BEST appeal is the simplicity of the original design-always; Most times, when we try to 'modernize' or upgrade facades, owners tend to lose the original architectural intent & simplicity. ESPECIALLY if listening to people with NO Architectural knowledge or expertise; As a professional, registered Architect and specialist heritage architect, I can expertly advise you so. Honestly, the original architectural intent (even if there was no architect involved)-is quite appealing. Simple rustic face brick with dark timbers and its a warm effect. I cant see anything too wrong here. Maybe just needs a wash & clean and painted sections touched-up, roof tiles painted/cleaned. ALWAYS TRY to keep the original architectural character; I hope you don't add rubbish to the design unless match it with same materials, angles, forms & theme-. last yearThat climbing Hydrangea on the right is beautiful and just about to flower. Funnily enough I’ve just planted one in my back garden, near the house! The plant that was removed looked more like a Clematis Montana or possibly a honeysuckle. If you give the Hydrangea time, it will help fill the gap, or you could add a climbing rose (some don’t mind the shade such as Zepherine Drouhin below which is also thornless). I love that Art Deco lady in the front door........
