Underfloor heating vs. radiators
Comments (11)We left our underfloor heating behind at a previous house - and I was glad to see the back of it. Once warmed, it stayed warm - and if the temperature outside rose, suddenly the house became a hotbox. When sudden cold snaps hit, it seemed to take forever for the floor to catch up. Spring and fall were the worst seasons, floor-heating-wise. Bypass a radiator to keep one room cooler... turn up one radiator (bathroom) to warm a particular room... and radiators give you a place to put a drying rack. Yes, give me radiators any time. I've got fuzzy slippers for cold floors....See MoreWhat are you glad you put in your kitchen, and what can you do without
Comments (123)Thank you for everyone's comments, had no idea this thread would prove so popular when I started it. We are plastering this week and we have finally bought most things for the kitchen. I did find some real 'finds' though if anyone is looking. Not sure where you are based, but regarding electrical goods we researched all our own and narrowed down our list, and once we had that we looked online for the best prices for each appliance. Instead of buying from lots of different places we took it to Bentalls, who not only matched, but also cost us less, and beat some online prices with a good 'deal' price they also then will hold on to them until you need them, but if anything goes wrong you have 'bentalls' rather than several online dealers to return items to. RDO Appliances also do this if there is one near you, but i'd advise you to research prices first. Another thing we found was inserts for the kitchens. Through our kitchen supplier these were expensive, bin inserts, pull out drawers, pull out larders, even the pop up sockets, sourced seperately through ebay and online we managed to save quite a lot of money by doing this, so our fitter will still have the right things on the day, but we are not getting the inserts from the supplier. What else..... erm kitchen worktop, unbelievably the exact same worktop, same material, same cut outs etc.. same sizes differed between suppliers by 3k! so do shop around for your quartz and granite....See MoreUnderfloor heating under engineered wood - can we have a rug?
Comments (3)Hi Minipie, Great question - you're right to be concerned about the surface temperature being affected when using rugs with engineered flooring and UFH. We would advise against using a rug in this instance, especially a thick rug as the surface temperature will increase in that section and cause a 'heat spot' which may cause issues. If the surface temperature will still remain no higher than 27C then you should be fine but it's hard to guarantee that with a rug. In addition to this, your flooring underneath the rug would be a different colour to the rest of your floor due to lack of sunlight exposure (although this would even out over months). We hope this helps! www.kahrs.com/gb...See MoreDo I absolutely have to have radiators in the bedrooms?!
Comments (10)I’d definitely have them. Re-sale might be an issue later plus heat travels to cold areas so the rest of the house will feel cooler without them. Fitting them at a later date may be more difficult / could result in having pipework on show - although you have said you’re in the final stages of the work. Radiators, or at least the pipework for them, would usually be fitted at an earlier stage of renovation so fingers crossed it can still be done without having to cause more upheaval....See MoreElla Heatly
