Container trees that like shade?

Hi,
Does anyone have recommendations for small trees that would do well in whisky barrel planters that would be in a shaded position?
Planters will be either side of north facing front door.

Hi there,

You could use a viburnum tinus eve price grown in standard shape (you can easily find it in this shape in garden centres and also online). It is a shrub, but when grown in this shape it is a small tree really. This is a very robust plant that does tolerante shade. It is evergreen and will give you interest year around as it bears small white flowers from winter to spring and black fruits in summer.

Alternatively you could go for an acer palmatum butterfly (small variety that does tolerante shade) -but make sure you plant it in Ericaceous compost, or a Hydrangea Limelight (again, it is a shrub, but does well in container and you can easily buy it in standard - tree shape if you prefer).

A better photo would be helpful, all I can see is 1 yellow leaf amongst a bunch of healthy looking ones, leaves do get shed by any deciduous tree - this is what scab looks like: Personally I'd keep it, you can spray it which would help but you're probably not going to eat the fruit anyway unless you're intent on making crabapple jelly? I have an old Bramley apple tree in my garden, it's completely rubbish, covered in canker but it still has blossom, the apples are still edible & it allows me to grow climbing plants up it so it serves a purpose for me. Taking a tree out of a garden really needs thought as it will totally change the space & as you say, shade is really welcome (unless it's a Leylandii tree, in which case it should be torn out & burnt, possibly with celebratory dancing round the fire...)

Hi. Is this a new house? Just wondering if you’d thought about cutting back some of the trees if possible? You might also be able to add something reflective in the garden ie water feature, mirror, light stone (can’t work out if you have decking down). I can’t say for sure but I’m not sure the colour of the wood makes any difference to the amount of light it bounces. I’ve got a walnut floor which bounces loads of light, I also inherited a really dark granite worktop in an east facing room but because it has a glossy finish it doesn’t darken the room at all. I’d get some floor samples in the room and see how reflective they are. Personally I might also choose the paint last (and after the floor is fitted) as there are thousands of paint colours and it’s relatively cheap compared to furniture. You could also consider adding a really large mirror on the long left hand wall. Also look at other reflective surfaces maybe a glass and brass coffee table, metal and glass for lighting etc. Are the curtains new?

British plants that are good for wildlife and ok with shade

What a wonderful idea! Can I ask how big your garden is? Just that British trees are pretty big and are really forest trees which get far too big for the average garden. If you have lots of land then native trees like Oak, Birch and Beech are brilliant for wildlife. They provide habitat for hundreds of different insects, as well as birds and mammals. Conifers are great habitat for nesting birds. Hawthorn and Mountain Ash are also good as they provide fruit for the birds in autumn, and tend to be smaller. Fruit trees are great too, providing nectar for bees and fruit for the birds in the autumn. Part sun and part shade will provide a good aspect for many plants. Some of the shrubs in my garden that the bees love are not British such as Ceanothus, Deutzia, Weigela, Cotinus. With perennials things like foxgloves, hardy Geraniums and even chive flowers are buzzing with bees. The more hybridised a plant is, the less likely it is to be bee friendly. I think a mix of native and non native planting will do the job. Ponds are also wonderful havens for wildlife and will increase the wildlife that visits your garden. The Woodland Trust and The Wildlife Trust are brilliant websites to gain more information If you want advice on native trees and shrubs. Good luck!

We're building a Passive house and are debating about brise soleil at the moment to shade the downstairs rooms. We live in Cumbria so similar to you it's only going to be necessary for 2-3 months a year, so nothing too intrusive/ugly. There are some good examples out there, but it's about knowing what to look for. You might find that it doesn't need to be as wide as you think - only enough to block the sun at its highest couple of hours in the day, and then in winter when the sun is lower you still get the light in
