Door and Cabinet Hardware Suggestions

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for good quality door and cabinet hardware which isn't crazy money - kind of whats the middle ground between Dowsing & Reynolds and Screwfix?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I think it completely depends on the style that you are going for. I’ve used Ironmongery Direct (online) - they have lots of different brands. I’ve also used Jim Lawrence - but they are all very traditional. I’ve also used eBay - if I’m not in a rush and know what I want, it will usually turn up on eBay at some point!

Hi Maria. I don't think you have to stick to cream, you could look at neutrals such as greige, clay etc. A pale olive or sage would also look nice. If you got the right shade a pale blue would also work or you could consider deeper colours with light wall units. What colours do you like as it may be best to start from there and advise which way the room faces? I think a shaker door would work well with what you have

What is the construction of the wall where you hope to have the cabinets. If the wall is a stud construction, you could consider recessing the cabinet(s) so that the door(s) is (are) flush with the wall. The difficulty is the door/drawer sizes, not all kitchens suppliers use the same size doors so for example a kitchen supplied by MFI/Howdens, B&Q, Wickes, Ikea and other 'sheds' have their own unique door sizes to varying degrees. This in turn can limit the doors available to choose from as modern standard door/drawer sizes might not fit so then you're looking at made to measure doors. Most MTM doors are made from mdf with a vinyl foil covering, with some 5 piece vinyl wrapped door ranges and acrylic faced doors also available, these are all reasonably priced but if you're after an oak shaker door in made to measure sizes that could work out quite expensive. How easy it is to replace corner posts, infills and decor panels really depends on how the original fitter installed them as basically you have to dismantle the kitchen to get to screws as good fitters like to hide as many screws as possible. Best to get the doors as blanks so doors are drilled to suit each cabinet, drilling door hinges isn't very difficult there's various jigs available to do this but fitting the drawer fronts depends on the existing drawer boxes. I've never tried the stick on vinyl but i'd imagine it would look rubbish and really is a last resort. Probably a bit to difficult for the average diy'er to do so be best to shop around, prices will vary a lot so get prices for doors only (get your own fitter on a day rate) and doors with fitting. Thank you for your views. It's reassuring to feel that both options would work. I'm still flipping between the two every 5 minutes, but will need to bite the bullet soon. Looking back at all my kitchen ideabook, I started off saving white kitchens with industrial/concrete features (grey), then moved to dark grey after visiting showrooms. The first section of the kitchen will be a fairly narrow galley with a bank of high units on one side then, after french doors, it will open up into an L-shape broken-plan section with lots of natural light. A 3D view of the galley section made me feel that matt dark grey might be a bit overwhelming. But it would also be dramatic, if paired with the right colours. Argh. I'll let you know what I decide. At the moment it's looking like white kitchen/grey walls&floor/lots of plants on the windowsills. Anyone ever feel like just throwing in the towel and bringing in an interior designer? The whole house is being remodelled, and the decision part of my brain wants a long holiday. I might have to toss a coin. p.s. I love the Critall windows. It's too late to have those in the kitchen, but we're hoping to have interior critall glazing elsewhere

Have a look at Hafele, https://www.hafele.co.uk/en/ they're a trade only supplier but there's plenty of retailers that use them [including me]
