Can anyone plan a small porch extension to create more of an entrance hall that leads on to somewhere for a downstairs WC? We only want to go out by about 1.5metres, thanks !

Regarding having the WC under the stair, you would need to consider both drainage and ventilation. If you have a concrete floor, this can be a costly exercise to install drainage. A mechanical extract fan will also need to be installed which is ducted to an external wall. Depending on how the floor joists above are set out, this could mean having unsightly boxing through your lounge or sitting room. In terms of the proposal from 'Man about the House', I'd move the door down a bit to avoid the toilet when you enter. I don't think there's enough space to have the toilet going across the width of the WC and you also have to consider the head height beneath the stair. I hope you find this useful.

Campo73, I do see what you mean... - Double doors are currently 150cm wide and really this is as much about bring light in from the rear, as anything else but could drop to one door if works better elsewhere - I would need to push the wall out further towards island for stud wall to go all the way & miss the window, still keeping this inside the utility space. If works better then not a big issue but will reduce the 90cm space between counters or make for a smaller island. - WC would also have to change shape (with stud wall moving out) but would then take up less room in utility space, although pan & sink would no longer be side-by-side can I put these back to back instead - Bigger issue is what to then do about the fridge freezer/pantry cupboard - these seem well placed to grab a drink/snack on the go without walking around the kitchen island but could also be relocated I've not doubt! If this works better for a range cooker for instance... Choices, choices, it really does feel like there ought to be a wrong/right way to all this but in any case, I'm not feeling particularly confident on the existing plan so will perceiver until we run out of time! Any suggestions, so that I can try and bring this layout to life on MagicPlan and give it a go?

Hi R, With my clients I start with a long questionnaire which looks at all your requirements for the space and how it is used. From here we begin by planning what we know. There is only one window that looks to the front lawn that I can see - and that seems to be a priority so I would begin by placing the kitchen there. Do you know which walls are load baring around the new shower room and store? It is then deciding where you would like the dining room in relation to the kitchen? What requirements do you have of the play room? As you start looking at the elements individually a plan will start coming together (fingers crossed). We always think of the space as one and as a design as a whole as everything is linked to create the overall effect.. however, it is essential to think about each space individually and what you require so that you can accurately place it to suit your needs. Thank you for your comments @drpepe101 and @rosemonde. The kitchen on the new plan is how our kitchen is now, the new plan only includes a small extension to the rear. The kitchen is not actually that dark, the back of the house and garden is SW facing so luckily we do get a good amount of light. It also does not feel cramped but that is due to the fact that it has been badly designed with hardly any cupboards - the fridge/freezer and our food is currently in the 'office' behind the kitchen! So I definitely agree that in order to create a kitchen in that space with all the cupboards we need - it will end feeling cramped. I did really want to take out the wall and chimney stack that separates the current kitchen from the office room behind it. We have had three different architects to view the property and they all felt that whilst not impossible it would be a very difficult job. The wall (which is the original exterior wall) is 2 feet thick and is built from large blocks of local stone, as well as having the chimney stack running through the centre all the way up to the roof. I am now thinking the best solution would be a side return extension either for just the width of the kitchen (sketch attached) which would not require planning i believe as it would be under 6m or possibly a longer side return. I wouldn't necessarily need a separate utility if we are widening the kitchen as i could incorporate a washing machine etc in to the kitchen. I would like a downstairs WC somewhere though. Currently our shoes/costs are stored in the cupboard under the stairs. If we went with this layout i would like to create a better opening between the kitchen and existing dining area and put pocket doors or similar in between the lounge and dining room so we can close off the lounge to make it feel cosier when we want to.
