Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help with kitchen layout.

Hi, we are really struggling to come up with a layout for our kitchen extension. We need to include 2x upright fridges. Tall larder cupboard and the usual oven and sink. We can’t seem to configure something that will work. Very open to ideas and suggestions please. The plan shows current position of oven/hon and sink.

Am assuming this plan shows the extended space? If so, I'd put all the tall cabinets along the LHS wall (where it's labelled Dining), sink under window (make those patio doors into window above worktop) and then have the peninsula pulled over towards the tall cabinets so it's a good working space in the kitchen area. Then the dining table can go beside the door to Utility and be beside the Family area.

As it is, folk are going to be walking through the kitchen all the time - to get to Family area, to sit at peninsula, to get to Utility and also to the Dining table. That's too much walking through a working space for my liking. So choose an end of the Kitchen and set everything else according to that.

Another alternative would be to keep the tall units where they are on the right, but move the peninsula over to come out from the Utility wall rather than the external wall. You'd have to squeeze the sink onto the peninsula too, or reduce the number of tall units on the long wall and insert either the sink or hob there (close to the Family end probably), leaving the other of the hob and the sink on the peninsula. That does mean that you have to walk through a galley-kitchen type space to get to Utility and back door though. But it leaves the patio doors alone and separates the Family and Dining areas.

What about moving your kitchen to the dining corner? Might be able to squeeze in an island too depending on your measurements. Then put dining table by kitchen window or over a bit outside utility space.

Hi David, the new plans looks really workable and only a little organisation will help things a lot. For a start, I would suggest that the Kitchen could remain in its earlier position, as it works just great, and am sure you are also keen on reducing the costs for this renovation. Consider putting a small kitchen island in the middle of the space, but nearer to the kitchen area such that one can work comfortably between both of these. The dishwasher and the washing machine can take up the space on the north wall adjacent to the kitchen area. If both can’t fit in the small area without blocking the rear exit, consider pushing the washing machine along that wall such that it’s just next to the small island. In fact the island is best placed in that position to be used as a worktop, bench during clothes cleaning. Lastly, the 6ft dining table can occupy the remaining space between the island and east wall comfortably and with a lot of space to spare for chair movement. This pretty straightforward arrangement will save on both the time and cost of doing your modification. Hope this helps. Following on from my previous post I’ve since done a lot more thinking! I’ve determined there is only one set up that works for the space... we needed informal dining and a place for me to bake with my kids....I definitely wanted a utility area... we needed a playroom/snug as don’t have one elsewhere so voila! The space to the right of the door is currently free but I thought I could have a sideboard here or else if I decide to swap our dining room and the snug around then I could make it a coffee area. Bin is in the peninsula- there are 3 sets of 800 pan drawers,dishwasher, Belfast sink, 90cm range, 2 wall cupboards, a 30cm pull out larder and a 80cm freestanding fridge freezer. Washer dryer in the utility with broom cupboard and space for excess coats and shoes. Would have light coloured units with white quartz top, antique mirror splashback and herringbone engineered wood floor. I found a Humphrey Munson kitchen (Berkhamsted) kitchen that has a similar layout and looks beautiful so I was cheered by that! Do you think it looks ok? I am planning on getting a pro to check it before we go ahead but just wanted some initial thoughts...

hi Jonathan. thanks for replying and the great plan. £4/5k is what we have budgeted for the porch as I feel reluctant to get rid of it for good as i think the house would look ugly from the outside and could be a really useful space if done correctly. The plan you have done is similar to what's in my head but in my head my kitchen is a lot bigger Lol!! I think it has to be a peninsula from that wall doesn't it? and we couldn't have doors out into the garden as the garage is below the kitchen then another storey below that down into the garden. it's a wierd 60's house and we have just discovered 3 rooms and a corridor under the house at the side of the garage internal wall which we didn't even know was there as there was no access to any of it. with regard to the cupboard in the study that's a really good idea to use that space in the kitchen my only concern is because it's a supporting wall with a corner would you need a column there or could a lintel do the job? the more I think about it the more complicated it's getting. thank you for your help

agree with One Plan, check the spec of the american fr/frz as most fridges can't be fitted in corners, there's also regulations on how close a gas hob can be fitted to an opening window. you could swap the larder tower and fridge around and also swap the drawer unit around for the oven/hob but you'd lose the wall unit. the second plan might work but i'd lose the top box and the tower decor panels (unnecessary expense), can't really see the rest of the design.

I would also suggest using the dining area as the main kitchen and moving the table to the other side then you can have a run of tall units on the left hand side or back wall

I also agree that the kitchen is in the wrong place but suggest an alternative to the dining room
