Is this Asbestos?

Hi All — was planning to strip the wall of wallpaper — seems it’s stuck to the paint/plaster, so now have reached the bare cement wall (I think). While hacking at it noticed little tufts of fuzzy stuff, although haven’t reached a pipe yet so not sure if asbestos or not. Obviously asking a specialist and not risking it, but if anybody has an idea of what it could be would be great. Also — how much will it cost me to get it replastered?

I can’t see any fuzzy stuff but it seems unlikely it will be asbestos.

And yes you can get it replastered. Expect to pay £450 upwards depending on how much you need replastering.

Diffcult, You can skim over it but that dosn't help removing the wall. It depends on what the regs are in your area but I'd say very carfully, but bear in mind its only 5% mixed in to plaster so chances are there wont be alot of it getting free if you carefull and if its a stud wall you can dissasemble it peice by peace and then have the whole ceiling replastered (it will need it anyway, plastering two ceilings together never works well). But I am no expert in asbestos.

Sorry to hear about this, a worrying thing to have happened, especially outside your children’s room. The contractor should have carried out a risk assessment before starting the job and then put in place measures to ensure that any asbestos identified is not disturbed, or is removed correctly. I would speak to the HSE*. The contractor may well be required to report this under RIDDOR regulations, especially as it happened twice. The following from the HSE is helpful, last updated 2018. https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/em1.pdf I don’t want to add to your worries, but it is better safe than sorry. Having said that, I agree that it seems unlikely that any dust will have penetrated the window, but I would still want to speak with the HSE. Hope it works out ok. Angie *Health and Safety Executive

Under no circumstances should the asbestos be touched by anyone unless it is an approved asbestos removal contractor. Asbestos is dangerous when disturbed and has a latency period, so if come into contact with it, it can cause mesothelioma (cancer) in later years. I am shocked at what your builder has suggested - don’t let him touch it!

I can’t see any fuzzy white stuff either, just a concrete wall. My stepson is a plasterer and he charges about £200 a day (in Herts) but a lot more in London. Total cost depends on the size of the area that needs plastering.
