Fake grass?!

It's difficult to tell but is the grass real or not? And if it is false where's it from please.

Good morning.

Yes, this is artificial turf. It is from Easigrass, I think the Kensington turf.

I used it here because the clients were adamant they wanted it, and it was a tiny area only. It should not be used routinely and for large areas. Artificial turf is very un-ecological as it is plastic and offers no carbon capture or resources for wildlife. Not only that, but it requires the removal of soil to form a firm sub-base and so living soil is lost too. Be wary of turf that claims to be recyclable as well, as often only certain components are and as they are woven into the whole, actually recycling them is impossible. Currently nobody recycles artificial turf and it all goes to landfill. It is also less permeable to rain than real turf and I have seen problems with localised flooding due to it. I hope that helps.

Hi Peter - thanks very much for such a full and honest answer! Which way does this garden face as the planting is just my style - my garden faces west and loses the sun at 5pm - would this planting suit my garden?

Us little hairless monkeys (humans) are constantly modifying and exerting change on our environment. While I appreciate the spirit of "accepting Nature's intention" the fact is that we've already decided against that by not living naked in a cave and hunting and gathering our sustenance. I've been doing this long enough that I have seen evidence of the following: folks who isolate themselves from their yards, and by extension nature, really don't care about it. Those who do spend time outdoors, begin to care even in small ways. We get people to care about plants and then the larger environment by drawing them outdoors and allowing them to fall in love. If this means using an iffy material to create a space that causes them to spend time in the yard, is it worth it if they then take one more step towards being a good steward of the earth than they would have previously? I would argue that yes, it's worth it. I'm a plant nerd who grew up playing in the swamps of New England, imagining I was Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion (again, NERD). I will happily poke around in the weed-infested, mucky, neglected corner of my backyard. But to draw my wife out there I have to create a more human space. And the longer she spends out there, the more she buys into my plant collection and some of my other weirdness. Perfect sustainability is a noble goal but really impractical for most. More importantly, I think it creates a chasm between people and nature. If they're surrounded by nature every day, they're a lot more likely to fight to preserve it everywhere.

Hi. I think a lot depends on budget as you don't have any beds so could spend a fortune on planters! ideally I would add planting all around like this image from garden builders. However assuming you're on some form of budget I would add either 3 spheres to the lawn area or one large one. I would invest in a large potted olive maybe 8ft and place in one of the back corners. 3 large planters ( this one is from primrose ) central on the back fence and add artifical topiary box plants. Palms also do well in pots and can be comparatively cheap for a large plant but look for a hardy one so its maintenance free and put it in the opposite corner. Maybe have either one of the bench seats with plant boxes either side to put along one side of the garden or a curved stone bench and have some form of seating table arrangement on the patio outside the door. If/when budget allows I'd add a couple of long troughs either side of the garden and add plants/small trees of different sizes plus a couple of potted large plants either side of the corner of the house

you could grow a climber on the bottom of your face of your house? I see the one above the window and perhaps you could continue that theme or maybe use a different plant and interweaving where the two plants meet. If you are going for the luscious look try useing larger waxy leaves, the bonus to waxy leaves is they are generally evergreen too so your garden won't look as twiggy in winter. Rhubarb grow very large leaves (though not waxy or evergreen) that take up lots of space and almost everybody likes a good crumble!

There is no such thing as a no maintenance garden, but choosing trees and shrubs only will be less maintenance. Obviously grass will need cutting throughout the summer. I noticed through the broken fence that your neighbour has several trees and shrubs so that’s the sort of thing I mean. Some trees do become huge (50-100 ft) so make sure there are no buildings or paths nearby. Shrubs vary in size from small ones such as Hebe (about 2 ft high) to tall ones such as Viburnums which grow to about 10 ft high. Hedges such as box or privet are quite labour intensive as they do need trimming. Shrubs that are small and stay small would be a better idea - things like Euonymous, Hebe, Cistus and Lavender. The saying “Right Plant in the Right Spot” is so true. If the planting area is sunny, don’t put shade lovers there as they will shrivel up. Soil type is also important, a Rhododendron needs an acid soil and will never thrive is alkaline (chalky) soil. You can get cheap soil testers at any garden centre. I do think you can mix planting styles - I have all sorts in my garden! It looks a lovely big garden so I am rather jealous!

Hi. Yes, this style of plantng would be absolutely fine for a west facing garden. The beds are under some trees and the house also gives shade at times of the day. The plants used are all tolerant of a degree of shade, or even prefer it. You should be fine to use it as an example.
