Renovating Design Dilemma Bathrooms

bathroom layout- shower/bath combo or freestanding?

My bathroom is 2.15x3.1 m. If I do a combo bath/shower I get more storage. If I get a freestanding bath I get a tub with a deeper soak but will have a shower screen glaring at me as soon as I walk in the door. Afraid that might make it feel claustrophobic when you walk in. With these two layouts what do you think?

Would love any pics as inspiration if you have them!

There are many other layouts you could do - does the toilet and sink have to stay in those positions?? Walking in and seeing them is worse than the side of a shower in my opinion!

Would a deep, maybe reclaimed, vanity give you enough storage?

i dont think the shower being transparent would be too claustrophobic, maybe if it was curved?

this is a layout i had in a flat once…

Hi, I'd definitely keep your feature bath. This can be painted in a nice Fired Earth Eggshell finish. I can't comment on your basin or wc, as I can't see them and have no idea what condition they are in? I'd tile the floor, shower areas and window reveals. I'd suggest upstands (skirting tiles) around the rest of the bathroom, then you can add some nice colour to your bathroom your painted bath will be a lovely feature. Have a look at some of my photosets which may give you some inspiration. Having said all this, I think your budget is unrealistic. The most important component in your new bathroom is the person who undertakes the work and this will cost you money. Good luck with your project. Jeremy

I also think the last plan could work if you change the door and you might need a bifold shower door (too early to add up!). I have to say I agree with the previous comment, freestanding baths are difficult to clean around. Mine is clawfoot which I assume yours won't be be so you don't need to try and squeeze under (!) but it's really hard to clean behind! I don't know what material you're looking at for the Bath but make sure the floorboards are strong enough to hold and also that it fits through all the doorways as they can be wider than standard.

I personally wouldn't consider free standing unless you have space all around it (otherwise you are getting the worst of both worlds)- you then have to think about floor standing tap. To me practicality outweighs design in a bathroom unless you have the budget to achieve both :) think about where your towel is for when you get out - where are the toiletries going to sit to be accessible, or candles etc if you want to luxuriate, what is your view when you are lying there....pillow for the neck - a lot have really sharp edges!

Bathroom layout to fit rolltop bath with shower screen

Any advice appreciated on how to proceed. I'm renovating the whole bathroom and wanted s freestanding rolltop bath with shower screen that sits flush to the wall. The toilet however has a large soil pipe going in the direction of the current bath so this would be on show. If I was to move the bath and toilet around, would I be able to fix a shower screen and Is there room for the sink? I'd love the freestanding bath as that's the look I'm after. Any ideas?

Hi Sarah,

A couple of questions:
1. Can you let us know the dimensions of the door and whether it is tight into the corner, or if there is some wall first (and what length?)
2. Are there any windows in the space? If so, where, what width/height/height from floor to start of window?
3. Where is your WC currently & the soil pipe it connects to?
With that info, I can mock up a layout or two…

Hi Sarah,

In the absence of window info, below are some quick’n’dirty images of one possible layout.

You do have plenty of space - BUT I strongly urge you to use a quadrant (curved) shower and do the same with the bath, as you don’t really lose any space in either, but make your bathroom much more spacious, with no sharp corners to contend with.

You could swap the shower & bath, though it may feel narrower entering the space.

If cupboard space is your driver, with careful selection of bath & shower sizes, you could squeeze a midi unit between shower & bath, or use a WC tall storage unit.

I will mock that up for you too!
