What to do with garden

last year

I want to renovate my garden but dont know where to start with designs. The garden has two levels and quite close the the back door with not much space immediately.

I also have a bit of land at the side of the house with a huge wall that extends round the back.

How would you renovate this garden?

Hi, it’s hard to imagine the garden as a whole. Could you draw a rough plan of it, or get a photo from upstairs of larger areas so we can see how the different areas link up?
Also, making a list of what you do / don’t want in the garden and / or how you intend to use the space would be useful- E.g, are you a gardener / do you want a veg plot, space for seating / bbq / planting borders / lawn, etc.

An awkward spot that is a visually important part of the house. I think the idea of an Acer is a good one, once planted it will become the main focus and should be up lot of possible. I would then look to plant an intricate ground cover mix of slightly more shade tolerant perennials including: Hellebores Hardy geranium Tellima Heuchera Gillenia Lamium Spring bulbs would help to prolong the interest with early flower colour, while the evergreen hellebores and buxus aempervirens (box) would create winter structure

The only sensible and reliable way of keeping a dog in, is to have a fence - and self closing gate! Any landscaping the builder does should fit with your long term plans - no point in having to dig up and re-do things. The areas immediately adjacent to the house should really be the highest quality/best detailed/most expensive elements, as these are the most frequently used areas: they certainly shouldn't comprise just a few low-cost paving slabs, as offered by so many builders! A significant proportion of our work is for self-builders and, whilst the garden budget often ends up being used as contingency for the house, I always encourage having a concept plan in-hand, even before work starts on the house. That way you can hopefully avoid future problems like soak-aways where you want to plant a tree, and shallow drains under your parking area etc., and even if most landscaping is delayed until after you have moved in, and perhaps done in stages, at least you can be confident of a coherent end result (albeit a few years down the road). Ideally you would have the builder do ground works like drainage, soak-aways, and moving soil around the site. One aspect that's worth doing early is tree planting - trees planted as "whips" when building work starts will have a chance to become established by the time you move in.

What a great picture, and a design that could easily be adjusted for your site, in terms of both hard landscaping and soft landscaping for a Cheshire site. The elements of slabs, wooden boards, rendered walls, low hidden water feature and lush low-maintenance planting can be achieved on a small budget. Water features surprisingly cost quite a bit, even a simple rill such as in the picture with small bubbling jets and lighting. To keep the cost down, you could look for concrete slabs, and use a softer wood and then stain it to the colour you want, rather than going for an expensive Iroko wooden board. Of course, once you start staining you will need a regular care schedule of cleaning it and re-staining it. Perhaps if the budget will allow, you could spend more on say composite decking boards and a stylish piece of furniture, and then use cheaper products elsewhere. A good Internet search will reveal some great products, but don't get carried away. Stick to your idea of how the garden should look and be strict with yourself. Hi Belinda. Rather depends what you’re daughter intends to use the garden for. Entertaining, parties/bbq’s somewhere to chill out, relax, somewhere to potter about, grow veggies or flowers, or simply something nice to look at? Does she require low maintenance? I think there are many ways it can be spruced up as @Forzaitalia said revitalizing the decking and pruning back overhanging branches would make a good start. I personally like the apple tree. I can imagine loads of little LED lantern or fairy lights (solar or battery powered) would make it very magical in the evening:)
