How did you achieve a light (non-red or pink) look refinishing red oak? They look beautiful!

Hello Sarah,

The floors had been finished with a clear, matte, waterbased floor finish from Loba. The lack of sheen diminishes the redness to a certain extent, because of the lack of reflection.

Ouch! Don't give up just yet - walls aren't absorbent so you may be able to save it. Have you tried baby wipes? If that didn't work, do the following: 1) Fill a bucket half full with warm water. 2) Add detergent - just enough to get a few bubbles when you agitate the water. 3) Wet a cloth in the water and rub gently on the stain (wear rubber gloves to protect your hands!) 4) Rinse the cloth and repeat as necessary, starting at the bottom and working your way up to avoid drip marks. 5) If the stain remains, dry the area thoroughly with a towel before moving on to step six. 6) When the surface has dried, rub a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser over the stain. Hi redkez78. If you like the natural silvered grey look it's really worth the wait. See our shed - just built in first photo and 2 years later in the other images (under veranda you can still see the difference as it's sheltered so will take longer). Friends speeded this up on their house by washing wood down with a large broom and a weak solution of water and bleach which worked well (see Art House B&B, Isle of Skye www.arthouse-skye.co.uk). Maybe good to test on a spare piece of wood first. Advantages - no maintenance at all and it looks beautiful! Alternatively you could use a water based pale grey exterior wood paint well watered down to create a 'wash' effect so you can still see the wood grain and you don't need to paint so neatly. Paint with a large brush then wipe excess off. Again, test on spare pieces of wood to get the effect you like, experimenting with percentage of water to paint. You are more likely to see swirls in the natural colour than if you stain it dark, which in my opinion would be more likely to cover bad sanding up. If you go over the whole floor with a 120 grit paper, it really should be smooth enough for anything. I think also that maybe you're confusing different finishes with showing up imperfections. You mention, stain, varnish and oil, all of which give a different look. I think stain and oil show up imperfections, whereas varnish especially the satin and even better gloss, will lessen imperfections. Stain - just stains, it doesn't seal or finish a floor Oil - can both stain and finish - depending on brand and finish Varnish - can colour and finish. What wear is the floor going to get? How do you intend to clean it? Oil is lovely, but not so 'moppable'. I'd be inclined to suggest a varnish with stain in it personallly.

Thanks colourhappy. I have painted some timber here which had the same stain, using primer/undercoat and that’s worked well. I have a hunch wood floor undercoat will work just as well, but I’m not sure what distinguishes it from ‘normal’ wood undercoat. Hence my slight hesitance.
