Improve kerb appeal

We moved into our house a few years ago but I’ve never been a fan of the front of the hosue. We want to add a porch to the front where the door is which is fine but do we go for a full pointed pitch roof or just a slanted one? This will be a brick porch with steps leading up ideally.

Also I’m not a fan of the tiles on the front either. Has anyone got any suggestions what do with them? Bare in mind this is a semi so don’t want to upset the neighbours. Any alternatives? Or just make it look nicer

I think a slanted roof style would sit better with the style of your house. A pitched roof tends to suit older properties I feel. As your house is in a row I wouldn’t change too much as it would look rather odd. You may find planning depts won’t be keen on too much change to the frontage maybe?

Personally I think a flat roof porch sits better on this age of house and helps keep symmetry with the other half of the semi.

After more thinking, we are planning on a major restructuring of the front. The garage will be converted into another room, the front door will be moved to the centre and the window moved to the right. The pipe will be also moved (apparently our builder tells us it's not too difficult). We will probably adjust the position of the top right-hand side window so that it's more symmetric. Given these potential changes, what would you suggest we can do alongside these to make the house more attractive? Perhaps add bay windows? A porch? The house originally dates to 1920s so we would love to renovate it in keeping with that era.

It's really not bad! And I love pebble dash as its all over our bungalow. Same colour as yours, we thought of painting it but believe the maintenance is tough. You've got some greenery under the window, good. check what type it is, you might want to change it for something with more texture or color. Sorry I'm no help here but I really think it's a nice looking house!

I think the thing for me is that there’s quite a big expanse of white on the lower level around the windows and the door. The rest of your street has a fanlight window above the front door - which again makes for better proportions. Adding a fanlight or adding height to the windows would probably need lintels adding - so could be pricey though. A relatively easier change could be to swap your front door for something more traditional. You also have a huge expanse of white wall at the front -maybe look at changing the wall to lovely railings or if it needs to stay, paint a different colour and add some plants?

Be careful with grey or anthracite windows on your house. It’s similar brick to mine and several other properties near me and a couple have gone for the anthracite windows which look awful against the brown brick
