Pergola timber dimensions

Hi, I'm going to build a pergola similar to the one in the attached photo. I'd really appreciate what dimensions you think these timbers are. Pretty sure the posts are 4"by4"?? What about the frame and the joists on top. Also, what would be the best way to fasten the frame to the posts? Just L brackets? Any replies really appreciated.

You'll definitely need to level the garden along the fence line if you want to sit there or put in a bbq area. Don't just build out from the highest level, excavate down to the lower level and retain the higher part with some new Oak railway sleepers. You can also create the fronts of your built-in seats with Oak sleepers. Deck or pave the base of the seating area, or if you're up against a tight budget use some self-binding gravel. To get a modern,m but rustic look use chunky timber 150mm x 150mm square for the pergola to a finished height of 2.4m above the finished level of the seating area. I paint all wood in the gardens I design black. It looks great, helps the planting to stand out against the wood and creates a contemporary look. I agree with MBH about the timbers. But an alternative for covering would be to use a canvas sail under the timber attached to the posts. You can get them in many colours and sizes. They are waterproof and can easily be removed and stored away if you don't want the shade.

Hello, Looks like you have a very nice space there! Regarding your narrow border, I would suggest some pleached trees to go in there (such as in the picture below) . They are great to give you some height and do not occupy a lot of space at all. As Sonia said, you can attempt to amend your soil by digging some grit it, but the most straight forward solution in my view is to choose plants that tolerate the conditions of a heavy clay soil. Roses, some varieties of crab apples and the evergreen holy tree (which is easily found in the pleached format) are some ideas. Drip irrigation is a good idea, but heavy clay soils are very water retentive (usually puddling is a problem with this soil and not dryness). As Sonia said, newly planted plants do need more watering to stimulate the roots system to establish in the new location. The idea of putting a sofa do block children's access to the change of level in the patio is good as it will add to the cozy feel you are after. A wooden pergola on top of it as the ones that you suggested is a very good idea. You can also get retractable roofs to give you the possibility of shelter from the sun. Sonia's idea of planting scented climbers on the pergola is a very good one as well. Another idea is to add a brick edging around your patio to mark the edges and make the change of levels a bit more obvious and secure. Another idea for your gate are is to select plants that can grow through the gravel layer (provided that the gravel is not on top of concrete). As Sonia pointed out, potted plants do require much more watering than plants on the ground (once these are established). So this would be a good alternative. Emily the way you speak of your garden and plants fills me with joy! I planted a Birch in a very large pot last year and did lots of research. Would a forest tree work in a pot? I did lots of research from The Royal Horticultural Society and they said yes! There is a Birch called Betula Jackmanii and it has an amazing white trunk, so one to think about. Jasmine likes sun and shelter so the one near the house is in a perfect place. Other plants I can suggest are Cistus (pink or white flowers). It only grows to about 4ft and is evergreen. I visited an open garden yesterday which had a gorgeous courtyard garden where they served tea and cake. It had a large pergola too with a silver birch growing through the deck and up through the pergola! Here a picture of it. The third pic is my Weigela which is a stunner, and the last pic is a Cistus.

I think those posts are 6"x6" and the cross members are 6"x2".

I would use stainless steel screws and coach bolts to fasten together as they won't stain the wood over time and are less intrusive to the eye.

Building a pergola can be a fun project. Based on the photo, it seems like the posts could indeed be 4"x4". As for the frame and Metal Joists, it's a bit difficult to tell from the picture alone, but I would suggest using 2"x6" or 2"x8" timbers for the frame and joists. These dimensions should provide sufficient strength for your pergola. Now, when it comes to fastening the frame to the posts, L brackets can definitely be an option, but there are other methods you could consider as well. One popular choice is using metal joist hangers. These are specifically designed for securing joists to beams or posts. They provide a strong and reliable connection, ensuring the stability of your pergola.
