Will this snake plant grow ok?

last year

My snake plant fell over and it turned out the root was all mushy.

So I split the leaves and cut them cleanly and pushed them into some fresh compost.

Will they re-grow and have I done the right thing here? I understand it will take a good 3-4 weeks for roots but still unsure if there is an better way! Thank you.

Hey Kusten! another Cardiff lady, yay!! I love fresh flowers in the house as well, I have a few plants (orchids and Anthurium included) but what I do about once every 3 weeks is go to the flower market in Grangetown (on Bessemer Road) - I think it's opened from 5am to 9am (silly hours, I know). You can buy flowers for a lot less than in a florist and you can get those that tend to last longer than 5 days - like kangaroo paws or bird of paradise flower or Gerbera with ferns and grass- really easy to make lovely arrangements with them. I love the arrangements you've made - you've actually given me a few ideas. Give the market a try, you never know, you may like what they have (and their prices!)

As a keen gardener, (and a professional textile designer by trade) I have had to cope with similar problem of my own in the past, marrying the aesthetic with the practical and fairly easy to do in such a space with the same type of morning light. I read many books and talked to many gardeners and came to much the same conclusions as a earlier commentator above (Tom Flanagan). I would say his suggestions are excellent, he obviously knows what he is talking about. Low growing ground cover plants, won't give you any height (which you really need) and climbing plants won't give you any foliage or flowers in winter (they can look messy very quickly too), lavender and such like, fine is high summer, not so the rest of the year. No, I would go with his suggestions of of a few hebe, daphne, euonymus, viburnum davidii and skimmia. These will give height and all year round foliage, and provide the backbone of the border. You can then add a few extra perennials if you wish and most of all - bulbs, which are much under used in these situations, but absolutely brilliant! You can have ones that flower in spring, summer, autumn and even winter (the wonderful kaffir lily which comes in bright pink or red flowers from late autumn through winter, even in the snow). This means you have colour among the backbone of shrubs, providing year round interest. The great thing is, you don't need to do anything much with bulbs either, once you've planted them the first year. Good luck!

Hi. Mmmmm.... the examples you posted are specifically pruned to that shape and need to be kept pruned regularly. I call them lollipop trees😊. Most trees don’t usually grow to a set height then stop, unless trimmed they just keep on growing. Containers will need to be big as they need a good amount of root space and will conserve water better. I think you’ll find the containers more expensive than the trees/ shrubs themselves. There are lots of plants you could use for a specific planting scheme. A local garden nursery should be able to help with what would be suitable for your area.

I think it could look really pretty but it’s obviously very narrow as you’ve said. I would therefore take inspiration from plants of the Mediterranean which are used to dry, ‘poor’ conditions. I did the same when I planted up a pallet which obviously is very narrow. Also taking into consideration your desire for evergreens, I’d suggest rosemary and lavender (think of the scents whilst sat there!) and possibly thyme. And interspersed with them- grasses is different weights and hues. You could then add some allium bulbs and agapanthus in between for some summer colour, but when they aren’t flowering you’ll have lots of different textures from the other plants to keep interest.
