Exterior remodel! ideas needed!

Hi! I am after ideas/thoughts on how to modernise the exterior of our 70s house. We are building a porch which i have shown in a drawing. But I’m torn between fully rendering the property or instead cladding the top floor and rendering the bottom half. I do like anthracite grey but not against a pale render. I would like to achieve a softer look but im not sure on colours. So any ideas welcome!!

The porch will add shape and interest to the front of your home. I feel that ensuring you have co- ordination between each of the 3 “faces” - the garage, the porch and the body of your home - is going to be key. At present the garage doors are different to the rest of the colour used, making things a bit disjointed. You could leave the brick (maybe give it a good clean) and focus on the cladding, front door, and garage by repainting trim and siding in a softer colour which goes with the brick and is not as contrasting as the current white. A bright front door would bring your entry forward and into focus. What colour to go with? Hmmm not sure. Try googling or search Houzz for exteriors with a dark chocolate brick (is that how you would describe your brick?) to find some inspiration.
If you wanted to change the cladding to bring in wood, you could go with dark trim (think black, dark gray or various darker shades) however that would need to tie into your front, so could entail considering replacing garage doors with wood or wood look to bring the look together. Fitting a wood front door would be a further co-ordinating element.

Thanks so much for commenting! We are able to change everything at the moment- roof/ windows/garage and front doors…. It’s just what colours to opt for that will look modern but soft…. I’ll keep searching Houzz too for inspiration!

I think it's safe to say that the crux of the matter is the 80's extension roof. If you're going to the trouble of a new extension then the roof needs to go and then both bits tied in properly. The doorway through to the back garden is too close to the Front door, and the roof is larger than that of the front door. They at the very least need to be identical sizes, or preferably under one roof the same pitch and proportions as that of the garage. The porch needs to be grander and centralised. I'm no expert plan drawer by any means, but i did a mock up of what i had in mind, the rest would be down to the architect and budget.

Hi zack, I like your roof idea. (Vaulted and flat) best talk to a design person to see how achievable it is. We are having a roof lantern in the middle of the flat roof extension and went to see one with it. It looked amazing, making the ceiling look a lot higher. If your original house has high ceilings like ours, you might need to reduce it a bit in the extension as PD allows 3m for eaves. For a flat warm roof, you might need to go down in ceiling height. I found out that you would learn so much during planning! As for your utility, if you don’t mind the utility closet idea as opposed to a room, it is a lot easier to fit in without side extension. We toyed with side extension too for a utility but didn’t want to loose side access to the garden. So we are putting a utility cupboard in where your ‘dining room’ is. But it will also function like a hall way to the extension. I would go for an island to define zone too if there is room. Although in our case, it is more because I succumbed to island envy.

Planning Permission, try making an informal enquiry about the amount of change allowed. It could save a lot of wasted time. Then you know what is possible. I would actually match up the bottom left window with the other windows. Appropriate attractive low maintenance plants are your friend. If it was my house, I would look at garden magazines, online, Houzz. Get a short list 3 to 5 pictures that appeal to you. Then I would research a reputable, well established local garden landscaper or perhaps a local garden centre works with someone. Go check their recent work. Local is best, more economical but most importantly they will be familiar with soil and climate and what thrives well in your area. A nice healthy varied green planting would I think absolutely transform your home and lift your spirits when you arrive home. Best wishes for your project.

One idea I would consider would be turning your current kitchen into a snug and utility by the side door, replace the conservatory with a full width extension, removing as many internal walls as possible and incorporating half the garage. No windows on the north side and place a fire along the north wall, kitchen on the south wall to create a large kitchen /diner/living room.

Render works best in distinct panels. 70's houses are quite low and can look squat. Retaining the brick columns on the corners will accentuate the verticals. I wouldn't render the sides.

Some great advise already there but I would steer clear of rendering. It’s expensive and not effective insulation, whereas a wood cladding can substantially improve your buildings mu. Something to consider in a 70s building.
