Front door handle

Hi everyone - We are looking to change our front door. Currently have one with a lock and a handle but like the style of the ones as shown in the picture here. Just wondering what people thought as I believe you can't leave these doors unlocked without leaving them off the latch and would need a key to enter which is great for security but for those occasions where you just want to leave the door unlocked as someone is coming over/ kids are running in and out, how do they work?

I just checked the site we got our doors from and they'll do you an ultion lock with that kind of door - we've got that type and you can leave it locked or unlocked. Thanks Anna. This may sound like a stupid question but how do you turn the lock. Do you use the door knob?

Phew. Can you believe I still can't find any damn handles to go on these doors. Turns out my problem is not what they look like but more that I need ones that don't put a hole in the other side! The original handles were short profile and screwed in from the front and then you screwed in the knob part into the central section of the fixed piece (See the image attached for one of the original pieces left - it has a hole in the middle you can't see now) As the handles are fixed from different parts of the door on the opposite side, all the standard door knobs won't work as I end up with a screw end and knut showing on the other side. Looked at the slimline handles that sit on the edge but it doesn't work for all sections as the doors fit tight now they are painted. Aside from making my own backplate fixings (which will look naff as would be painted wood!) - does anyone know where sells the knob plate I'm needing?? I must have emailed ten companies and spent days looking, to no avail.

That looks like the original catch. My parents have the same on their understairs cupboard, works really well and it's a nice design. I would keep it, but perhaps remove old layers of paint and then repaint it.

Solid oak tolerates temperature changes much better and better suits the front door. The front door is always exposed to moisture due to rain, snow, or fog. Also, the front door shouldn't fade over time due to direct sunlight falling on it in hot weather. I think it's much more profitable for you to take a solid oak door because it won't have to be changed after five years of use. We bought an oak door made of solid wood about ten years ago at https://www.ukoakdoors.co.uk/internal-oak-doors/four-panel-doors. I like that I don't see any cracks or wrinkles on this wooden door. My wife jokes that even my face is covered with wrinkles, despite the door has remained smooth and looks like a new one.

The door knob is usually decorative only. You need a key. The top keyhole is a Yale. The bottom one is a security key. My son has both. It’s easier to break in with a Yale only hence the reason he has the security key.

Hi Sarah - we've a different handle (this one https://www.modernupvcwindows.co.uk/solid-door-designer.php?t=53-0-0&w=900&h=2080&h0=900&v0=2080&x=7000100000000001&p0=00T1) but I suspect the mechanism would be similar which would mean turning the knob to engage the multi point locking mechanism before you turn the key to lock the door.

Since we push our handles up to engage the locks, I'm guessing a knob would be turned the 'wrong' way to do the same.
