What would our 1930s terrace interiors have looked like?
Comments (12)We bought a 1930's house recently in west London. There were a number of styles prevalent during this time usually falling into 1 of 3 categories - art deco (the one everyone knows about), mock-tudorbeathen which as the name suggests has tudor beams, oak iron studded front doors and often oversized fireplaces too. Finally there were the modernist homes with a focus on modern materials (think lino, curved glass crittal windows and tubular steel frame chairs etc. For me however its some of the smaller architectural details that I love in 1930's houses - lead light windows (sometimes with stained glass), picture rails in every room, 1 over 3 panel doors with high bakelite or brass knob handles and best of all original herringbone parquet floors! These are the things I've chosen to focus on in our house without going all out 1930's! Also as ASVInteriors mentioned there is also an element of arts and crafts to some of the 1930's homes which can often be seen in pretty entranceway doors/windows, quality inset kitchen cabinet doors/drawers, panelled cupboards and sometimes board and batten type hallways. I found the original brochure with illustrations for the homes built local to us from when they were first constructed which gives a great idea of what the interiors would have been like originally. Comments (11)hello, it depends on how much of it you want to change, we've all been there, decorated a room or something, then changed our minds a year later, so I'm of the view that basic colours work the best...I've done it with many gardens keep the colours basic then add on..you could do as little as spend £50 to transform your garden. If your house was mine and I had an unlimited budget I'd concrete and paint the wall white, put a palm where the shrub is in a white square planter, and repaint the woodwork, I do like the idea of grey but it would depend on if you are keeping it all the same colour. I don't agree with the Tudor comments, your house is quite new, why would you want it to look old..but of course we all have different tastes... Personally I love buildings painted white, fresh looking concrete with tropicals in the garden, I have a 6 foot Australian tree fern and bananas in my garden, there's nothing like sitting out there in the summer, I love it......See MoreI would like some help for my living room

Comments (5)Hello Ivan, As you can see from the sheet Sonia added - it would be more like £300-£500K for a 4-5 bedroom home, you also need to bear in mind that this google link she has may not be up to date as all prices across the board have gone up dramatically in the last year (and still going up), ut also depends on the quality of finishes and materials etc, the construction of the home and so on. The location you have mentioned also means this may be a little higher as in and around London usually demands slightly higher costs for both labour and materials. As Phill mentions above, you will need to look at methods of funding if you are wanting something like this, and you will need to have full designs and specs drawn up already for this. You could do these yourself, or pay someone like an architect or interior designer (depending on how much you want to pay), to do some initial plans which will allow you to get some pricing together and look at feasibility. Best of luck - Gina...See MoreUser
