Accessible upgrade to ensure

Our ensuite will require an upgrade sometime soon and to help us stay in this house long term I’m wanting to have a walk in shower. The room is not very big (2560*4190) and I’m not sure if it will be possible. I’ve considered closing off the door from the bedroom to increase the length available for the shower and having a door into the space from the walk-in wardrobe but that adds a different set of accessibility issues. Any ideas?

Dimensions of ensuite are 2560*2580. Sorry I obviously can’t read plans 😉

You could move the door from the bedroom. Shown here with a shower footprint of 2000x 1000.

Other ideas to make it accessible are a wider door, non slip floor, comfort height wc, seat in the shower, shower niche at a lower level.

But it doesn’t have too look like a hospital bathroom so you can incorporate natural materials and put great quality lighting in which for me means lights with a high CRI (which means colours reproduce better which is kinder to eyes).

I’m thinking about putting this into my bathroom.

I like that you can get some great sound as well as lighting- I also like that you can change the colour temperature setting it automatically to be whiter in the morning and warmer in the evening which mirrors circadian rhythms

Put your router on the middle floor. My router it two floors from my computer and for the most part it is fine but I believe it would be better closer. Therefore you need to tell your electrician that the master socket has to be on the middle floor of the house rather than the traditional ground floor.

Hi! I'm on the same project but yours is nicer to start with (tidy and no messy plumbing like we have!). It depends if you are going for a long term reno or temporary as to what you can do. Also what colours do you like? I would see if you can cover the floor so it works with the wall tiles to bring in some contrast. Vinyl is an option but you can also paint it (bigger job as might need sanding first) and then there are floor stickers but I think vinyl is much easier. They do some amazing modern patterns. A rich Navy or even classic black would work with the beige tiles and you could easily paint the cabinets with something like the Rust-Oleum cabinet paints which can be used in a bathroom. I've done all my kitchen doors in it and it's amazing stuff. Then add some matching accessories and it's instantly updated even if you can cover the floor.

Thanks Jonathan. Would also be able to keep the toilet in the original position by moving shower to what was the vanity wall. Might have to look at how difficult it would be to move current drainage given the concrete floor. Entry to shower would be open at the bottom - probably need to shorten the length of shower screen to allow easy entry. Making the door wider is a good idea - maybe a barn door.

Like this. You don’t have to move your wc. However given where the soil pipe is outside I’m confident your plumber could go through the wall rather than floor and so moving it shouldn’t be a problem.

I like the barn door idea- although I’m not sure how heavy they are and if it is harder to open one. Is it possible you might become wheelchair users? If so I suspect sliding a door may be harder than pushing one when sat in a chair.

Good point re moving soil pipe. Having the toilet on the external wall would allow more knee room. Which would probably work better with a double vanity along the external wall. My thought with the barn door was to free up space - easier to maneuver about and remove the need to get ”behind” the door. Thanks for your ideas Jonathan
