which type of patio stone?

I’ve booked to get this tired patio updated with new stones next month, but I actually need to choose some. Various installers have recommended different types and I am clueless - sandstone, limestone, porcelain…? My requirements are not slippy when wet, quite like a slate look. Would appreciate feedback on what others have used and how they find it?

Im no expert but I do have both Indian Sandstone in one area of the garden and porcelain near the house. Porcelain is more non slip but it can get grubby due to the non slip finish, but it comes up lovely when jet washed. The sandstone has a more country look so lovely in a cottage garden. It can also be bought in a sawn finish which is smoother and has a more modern finish. I would recommend you get whatever you choose jet washed regularly as both can get grubby over the years. Nothing is maintenance free I’m afraid!

If you like a modern look try the porcelain as it does come in many colours including slate grey.

You could jetwash the ones you have see what they're like & if you still dislike them paint them see how that comes out.

Have you had a look at quartz (silestone, compac, cimstone etc)? They offer a lot of white coloured stone and it has the features of granite worktops with the look, feel and touch but they come without the added maintenance of granite worktops. Wood worktops compliment light coloured kitchens but they do come with extra maintenance that if not kept up to scratch will make the wood look nasty after a while. Corian is a solid surface material that comes with various white/grey/light colourways and a key thing that makes it popular is that the joins are invisible, so it looks like one giant piece. Personal preference and a lot of pictures will get you an idea of what it is you want. There are quite a lot of options out there so make sure you take some time to research each worktop material and brand.

Hi there. Porcelain paving is becoming increasingly popular and has lots of additional benefits to traditional stone. The following are some of these benefits: • Stronger and more resistant to hot/cold temperatures. • Completely impervious to water, making it very stain resistant with no need to seal. • Will not fade at all. • Modern, clean lines. It’s a nice design! Tough choice on the tiles because I like both. I’d carry on the wooden tiles to the edge of the step so it looks streamlined but it’s entirely your choice. Perhaps you can lay the samples out again when your raised beds are done? One thing I notice with the raised beds is I don’t think the one one the left and the curved one will be wide enough. Not sure what you’re using to build them but when you’ve taken into account the thickness of the walls it will leave a lot less then 50cm width for the soil and plants. I’d have at least 40cm for the soil width (better for the plants) and an extra say 10cm for the wall each side but this is assuming they’re brick or block construction. Love the sunken bed idea:)

We did jet wash them during lockdown, and they didn’t come up very good. That was when I decided we should get the patio replaced with something more modern rather than just pay to re-grout them. Just been waiting to justify the spend. Erring towards porcelain as it seems popular, just worried about slippiness… it conjures images of bathrooms

I bought 1 slab of porcelain to try it out at home and it was completely none slip. There are different grades and mine is R13 the highest non slip grade. It does trap the dirt a bit so I would suggest R11 rating?

You have a lovely flat patio at present. Maybe you are just bored with it and don’t need to spend your money anywhere else. Seems you have a lot of weed between slabs. How about re-grouting and putting in some attractive planters. Sorry, I’m in a grumpy mood!

Porcelain isn't slippy IMO plus you can buy products like wet&leave that help keeping them relatively clean too.

Yes that slate one is nice. Need to go to the suppliers and looks at them this week. Seems porcelain gets the thumbs up.
