Reinstating Chimney breast
Comments (7)Hi Margaret, In my experience you wont be able to mix gas with solid fuel fire places. So you will need to make a choice between the two, especially if they are sharing the same chimney breast. Every chimney and condition are different, so even on my own projects, I would speak to a few manufacturers and ask for their advice and have a specialist chimney engineer / consultant come to look at it and not just my builder. All good plumbers are up to date with gas regulations and should know what is required for a gas installation so having a talk to your regular plumber might also be a good start. Turner Baker do a wide range of surveys for chimneys, Chesneys have an excellent range and Scandinavian brands have gorgeous designs too. Personally I would chose a brand and style (or a few) and ask the companies to come and survey the property and provide quotes. Good luck and have fun choosing your gorgeous new fireplace!...See MoreIdeas on what to do with removed chimney breast overhang
Comments (9)Thanks for the responses all. Yes I think we may opt for rebuilding the chimney breast and leave a larger fireplace opening so that we can put things there. Sarah - our builder suggested making a media unit but we aren't that keen on TV's too! Thanks Ed - yeah I think you are right re the cottage look. Rinq - we would have loved to remove the breast all the way to the ceiling, but it was removed 30 years ago and its not inline with regulations to do it that way now. So building control wouldn't let us disturb what remains and instead instructed us to install the gallows brackets that you see in the photo...See MoreCan you add a doorway to a chimney breast alcove wall?
Comments (6)You need to establish the purpose of the wall you want to knock an aperture through. It might well be bracing an outside wall supporting the chimney and holding up the floor above. You can put an aperture in it but you need specialist advice about how to do it- that’s what structural engineers do. Most likely your builder has one they use - make sure you get a copy of the structural engineers recommendation to ensure firstly you haven’t got a builder who thinks he knows as much as a structural engineer and hasn’t bothered employing an expert, and you may possibly need the recommendation for building regs....See MoreDeep chimney breast.

Really love Sonia's suggestions, and in addition have you thought about making this area a feature with some wooden panelling or a decorative mirrored surface or something you like along those lines? Have a great day, warm and best wishes Team SPEAK...See MoreSonia
