Comments (166)Those are wise words Karen! am so glad it worked out for you. Love to see a photo, what colour or shade did you choose? Jools, The bitumen is a right pig, best way we found is to make it cold, so it becomes brittle, then you can scrape /chip it off. We used a window scraper, coarse wire wool and various sandpaper. We left the window open on a cold night, turned heating off in there, and you could try a cooler fan on it. Putting ice bags on it didn't work as well as we hoped. we used a round sander, but it can cause swirls, it's really awkward ! To be honest a few dips and scratches on an old floor are okay in the end, don't be too afraid of it, they are only pieces of wood stuck down on the floor, not bone china, as long as you try not to break them, or set fire to them, otherwise you can't possibly do more damage than I did, and they recovered!...See MoreAir tight, sealing floor slabs and MVHR
Comments (0)We've heard that self builders should consider sealing concrete slabs i.e. around the cavity walls to stop air leakage. Our builder said that he would seal them up with cement and this common practice. does anyone know of ways and any products to reduce cold air bridging effect? Comments (6)hi, it is possible to tile on a timber floor provided that there is a matting placed over the boards before tiling. there are a number of systems out there to use, but a tried and tested product is ditramat. if the floorboards are properly secured to the substrate . the matting will be fine as long as instructions are followed and the subfloor does not have a lot of movement. what will make a difference is the tile you use and the size of grout joint that is used., it may be wise not to have a 1 or 2mm joint as this can result in cracking of the grout or tile. I have used ditramat in the past and found it a durable product. best used with a porcelain tile as it has it's own inherent strength over ceramic tiles, but you can use it with ceramic tiles. important to use flexible adhesive groan good brand Mapei, Bal are ok. if you have a good tiler they can advise. tip dont skimp on the system you use. there are many cheaper alternatives. hope this can help along with all the myriad of good advise bestowed on you. best Rowland...See MoreKitchen flooring dilemma
Comments (14)Thanks @izzyjenes been in the house 2 1/2 years and can’t believe we didn’t do it earlier. The whole house (apart from kitchen) is the original floor boards. We decided to carpet a couple of the bedrooms and there was a pile of vinyl ends and we were surprised at the selection. I’m defo going to consider vinyl when we do our kitchen ( no time soon). 8 months agoHere are the installed pictures of the Madrid color that I also just posted on the Medieval Floors houzz discussions as well. It’s a light natural wood color. The color is much nicer in person, a lot more natural.

8 months agoI installed Gaia Pichi from the Red series in our guest room remodel this summer. I chose Pichi because it matched my color tones and the thickness met the transition height to an adjacent tile floor. The installation process was pretty straight forward and the results turned out well. We considered the Rhea because it has a consistant tonal range, which is hard to find in LVP flooring, but the color was a little bright for our room.
Flooring manufacturers don't tend to advertise their pattern repeats. It turns out the Gaia Pichi had five patterns and five reverses. As I unloaded the planks I labled them with pattern numbers; 1, 1R, 2, 2R, etc. Using the numbers in the layout allowed me to avoid having pattern repeats adjacent to each other. For a room that was 17' square I purchased two extra boxes of tile. This proved to be fortunate as the very last box gave me enough of all tiles varieties to maintain the pattern separation.
Overall we're very happy with the flooring. The install is only 3 months old and the room doesn't get a lot of traffic but, so far, it cleans easy and looks great. We have no complaints.
